unit of atomic mass is amu, which is given wrt the Carbon 12 isotope. This is what it means by standard, as it is used as convention throughout the world.

That's not the reason it was picked up.
1/12th of C-12 atom represents the mass of 1 proton/neutron (they have about the same mass). And each atom's mass can be expressed as the sum of nucleons * amu.(roughly, for example Cl has a mass of 35.5 amu) It's rather a convention. Another reason is - no other nuclide has an identical whole-number mass on this scale except carbon-12. @Gaurav @Spooderman
