Black screen upon boot
I just found out about bazzite a couple hours ago, did a fresh install over my previous installation of chimeraos and picked both my SSD and HDD to add as disks. went thru installation just fine and everything and was getting all my games ready and then I reset my PC after adding a udev rule for dolphin emulator and now it boots into a black screen (at first it was booting into a black screen with a

at the top left but I stopped getting that. have tried restarting multiple times. have been trying to reinstall, but I can't as when I try to install to the disk, it said it can't since "You selected disk sdb (my SSD), which contains devices that also use unselected disk sda. You must select or deselect these disks as a set." Is the reason it was a black screen after boot because I confused it by installing to two disks on accident(I've never used this kind of installer)? or is it unrelated and something else needs to be done28 Replies
I did not have any space left on either drive, so I deleted the bazzite on the HDD to reclaim the 1tb
neither drive has anything important on it, but I left the SSD bazzite-deck-stable thinking there might be a way to keep the stuff I set up just a bit ago
I assume this is because I only did the one drive?
The installer has a bug in it (upsteam issue I think), if you re-install, it will often leave a Fedora entry in the efi partition. If you are just nuking everything you can just remove the efi partition when you selecting the drives. However it's more complicated if you are dual booting with Windows
windows isn't touching this machine
so I think I did forget to remove the residual file ur talking about I'ma do it again rn
just booted into language selection
is this fine? or is the other one required to be deleted too
for clarity if you are not dual booting and you leave this partition with any Fedora based atomic desktop you'll get that error above.
The simpliest is to remove it (only do that if you are not dual booting though)
okay
fingers crossed 🤞
been stuck on deployment starting but it's a hard drive so I'm not expecting speed
Oh it's not stuck. that part just takes forever even on an SSD. Note that installing Bazzite on a HDD rather than SSD is going to be very slow
we're past that hurdle
installing run time
@wolfyreload
it's been doing it for a min or two now
everything from squashfs on is the same
and there will occasionally be a block of something I believe but it is WAY too fast to see anything
That looks like a corrupt ISO file. What tool are you using for creating your USB media? Also have you checked your ISOs SHA265 hash against the one provided on the site
rufus
and I have not
it's the same iso I used the first time
I've had better luck with Ventoy or Fedora Media Writer than Rufus with Bazzite and atomic desktops overall
yea I've been having issues with Rufus last couple times
But it's weird that it's the same installer and it worked before
but I didn't have another install atm so I used it
am reflashing with balena and I have the checksum
Good luck. Hope that works
I'm in
where do I access the SSD I included during install?
I only see my external drive
and my HDD
Check if you can see it in KDE Partition Manager. There is a guide for mounting additional disks https://universal-blue.discourse.group/docs?topic=970
I do see it
it is "unknown"
however I do know that it's actually bazzite-deck-stable just like the hard drive
when I first saw it said it instead of unknown
Oh I think it says unknown if you don't tick that disk in the installer
I think it's so you don't accidently remove partitions of a disk where you don't want to install Bazzite
there was HDD, SSD, and external. first install I clicked HDD and ssd and second install it forced me to pick both again but when reclaiming storage space I only deleted the space on the hdd
here it had said it was bazzite, didn't touch it
here it says unknown, didn't touch it
I think Imma just format and mount it normally
reboot into black screen
not sure if I can use bazzite if I keep getting black screen every reboot after finishing set up and getting into the desktop
would choosing desktop instead of htpc do something different? is there much of a difference between the two?
htpc loads the deck image which loads into steam on boot. It might be failing to do this giving you the blank screen. desktop mode gives you a pc that has steam/lutris and some patches preinstalled
htpc same USB, desktop mode different USB, both fail if I check the iso (only failed this one time and the one last time. all others passed)
with htpc iso I was able to do it without checking and it worked up until the usual black screen after all the stuff, this one failed even that
might just go back to chimeraos or something similar. it's almost 2am now
If Chimeraos is working better for you it might be easier to carry on with that one for now
I switched FROM chimeraos cuz of some issues I had but it was also very out of date from lack of use
There have been a few reports on the blank screen issue, not sure what the cause of it is. One thing you can experiment with is installing Fedora Kinoite or Silverblue and rebasing to Bazzite. At least then if it fails you can boot back into a working system
I saw some of those issues but I couldn't see a relation to mine
like one of them was someone changing something with lutris I think, and that's not my problem
Same problem I have, new install goes to the black screen after getting the screen with _ in the top left. Ended up going back to Windows.
