Can't open Steam, not even using the Terminal
Rebooted my system and Steam simply won't launch

decided to rebase to
bazzite-nvidia:stable
rebase got stuck... last time this happened I needed to format my computerThe rpm-ostree rebase shows no progress information. It takes about 10 minutes where it looks like it's jammed
I usually open another terminal and watch it with
journalctrl -u rpm-ostreed -f
and then I can see the progress in the background that it is actually doing somethingI'm 30min in
30 minutes does seem a bit slow...
any clue what might this mean?
ok it prompted for me to reboot
wish me luck
Good luck
I'm back
nothing changed, still can't open Steam

kernel bug?
any way I can rollback using ostree to get the previous kernel? (6.8.8)
There is an upstream issue, you going to have to rebase a bit further back than stable try this one
bazzite-rollback-helper rebase bazzite-nvidia:40-stable-20240514
This that helped this person https://discord.com/channels/1072614816579063828/1241414652777463959lol I'm having a similar issue: https://discord.com/channels/1072614816579063828/1241937645177667614/1241937645177667614
Yeah was about to answer that thread when I saw you had this one too
I'm sorry but what does the
bazzite-rollback-helper bazzite-nvidia:40-stable-20240514
command do?This is the upsteam issue https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2280899
oh no
oh I think I got it, it rollback to a certain commit
It's going to roll you back to bazzite nvidia before the upsteam issue occured
It might be further back than you need but it will hopefully give you a stable system
ok gonna try that
Hope it works, good luck
the command did nothing
can't I just:
instead?
fixed it, try again
oh ok
rebasin atm
maybe this'll also solve the Steam issue
yeah you could do that too. bazzite-rollback-helper is just a wrapper for rpm-ostree
Yeah, you need the compositor to open steam
So it should fix your steam issue
this is not related to Bazzite specifically, right? all images, including regular mutable Fedora, are affected by this?
Without it you cannot open anything that uses opengl
this is crazy, first time facing a "too up to date" issue lol
yeah fedora broke fedora
KDE 6 is bleeding edge so this rollback thing is essential
another half an our rebasing...
fortunatelly, theoretically, mutable users could also roll back to previous kernel version
tho rebasing is definitely way more neat and secure
rebooting now, fingers crossed
Yeah I've had the same Bazzite install for over 3 months now. For nobara my record was 3 weeks
ok my compositor is turned on again
How did that rebase go so fast?
lol have no idea
tho Steam is still borked
maybe I should rebase further back?
Try rename your .steam folder to .steamold and start steam again. It will reinstall the steam client
ok, steam is still not opening
ok it is creating new
~/.steam
folders... but steam still doesnt launchit's probably redownloadinng it's client
Do you get this window?
had to rename the original folder, that one under home is just a symlink, which points out to
.local/share/Steam
Hopefully it will launch normally, then you can just copy your games back
had no games installed lol fortunately
lets gooo
ok let me close this with the solution
A difficult one as you had two big but unrelated issues
There was a bad update issue with steam too recently https://discord.com/channels/1072614816579063828/1241552668028178504
omg what is happening with the Linux community ðŸ˜
I kind of don't blame Valve for doing an Ubuntu on the steam deck. Bleeding edge can be.... fun at times
ok I think thats it for now
I'm VERY satisfied with my Deck experience
I use SteamOS on it, and after this experience, I'm never gonna think about using Bazzite on it LOL
I don't use Arch because I deslike bleeding Edge, Fedora is enough for me, but I would never imagine this happening
tho now I'm thinking about hopping to Debian LMFAO
I would consider Bazzite over Windows 11 on some of the other handhelds but yeah Valve does a REALLY good job with SteamOS on the Deck
just kidding, but I would hop to Kubuntu tho, easy to get NV drivers
I'm using Kubuntu on my work machine. It's been great. I can see why Kubuntu is still on plasma 5 though
me too!
I really disagree with some things Plasma 6 did
like changing how custom keyboard shortcuts work
They also trying to drop x11 a little too soon
Think Plasma 6.1 will be good
this was the reason why I rebased from Kinoite to Bazzite
thanks a lot btw, you saved my ass haha
You are welcome. 🙂
gonna close the thread
Solution1. Rebase to a previous deploy in which the upstream bug was still not introduced: 2. Rename Steam folder, so it is completely reinstalled: 3. Launch Steam again 4. To reinstall the games, just copy the contents from the old folders to the new ones:
./steam.old/steam/steamapps/compatdata
and also ./steam.old/steam/steamapps/common
First one are the prefixes, second one are the games' files
