What type of socks to wear?
Let me clarify: I'm in the middle of upgrading my wardrobe. Infact overhaul is a better word. I have never given thought to my socks. Earlier I used to wear invisible socks with sneakers. And longer formal ones with suits. And lately, I've been wearing woolen socks in winter while ankle length in summers. I was wondering if there's any recommendation with regards to material, length, and colors (to buy and to avoid). Kindly guide. Sorry for the n00b question.

it depends on your choice of shoe
for me, length is easy, either no sock or crew length socks. dress socks are typically longer so they don't fall down - i would not recommend going shorter here
material depends on your preferences; my most common is cotton (a multipack of white Hanes and a few of the uniqlo 50 color socks), and i was given a couple of wool socks (black Smartwool, olive Eddie Bauer) for colder weather. light merino wool is a good option, but i have communal laundry and don't want to risk people stealing them lol
color depends on your preferences AND wardrobe, especially for casual wear. when just starting out you can try to match your socks to your pants or go one shade darker, then once your wardrobe is settled get into more adventurous or distinct choices
Thank you so much for the detailed response. Really appreciate the guidance. Just the clarify, when I'm wearing a white sneaker or say a New Balance running shoe with say, blue jeans, do I match the socks with the jeans color as you said or something that goes with the shoe. Can I wear white socks over white sneakers? Or should I wear some other color?
white sock + white sneaker is fine
with socks a lot of it comes down to personal preference - actually putting on your socks/shoes/pants and seeing if you like how they look together
and if you're actively running or doing other physical activity, i'd forget the rules and just buy whatever allows to perform the best
Thank you again! Helps me a lot.
Except cycling, where you should always wear white socks.
