tie width allowance?
My suit has 3.5” lapels. I’m wondering if a 3” tie would work well, especially considering I have relatively narrow shoulders (17”), or if I should get a 3.5” tie

No way to know without a picture
The match your tie to lapel width "rule" is extremely loose (like basically all the menswear "rules"). I do 3" ties with 3.5"+ lapels all the time. Agree that pictures would help.
I know a lot of people swear by the lapel width rule. Personally I focus more on what looks right for my body. My tailor wanted me to go thinner for my suit lapels, but I stuck to 3 inches. I’m 5’11”, 195 lbs.
When I order ties and specify width, I go with 3.25 inches but with a nice taper. And for store bought ties, they’re 3.1-3.25 inches. I feel like 3 inches or less look too thin on me.
