Alternative color combinations for this outfit?
Hi. I was wondering if this outfit works well just with a black sweater and a white button-down underneath. Also, would it all pair up well with some dark chocolate brown Chelsea boots?

Black sweater with navy slacks can be hard to pull off. The lack of contrast can muddle the colors. Brown chelseas with navy chinos sounds fine though pictures of the actual items are always best.
But most of us here will tell you that the skinny chinos and v neck sweaters are very dated looking and not recommended
Hi @epistrophy . I'm not very into formal wear at all, but I need something I guess preppy enough for just one occasion (not strict), if that makes sense.
The problem is that I can't find the perfect shade of gray for the sweater, but I found a good black one that I didn't buy yet. Do you reckon it's that big of a deal where I should spend time searching for the gray instead of going for the black?
For context, I already have a white OBCD, some dark navy trousers, and dark chocolate Chelsea boots.
I'm a little confused about nitpicking the perfect shade of gray for the sweater but then saying screw it and just going all black? A black sweater will not look that good here imo if you're set on the navy pants and brown chelseas. Black, navy, and dark brown are good colors together if you pick 2 and toss 1 (for the most part).
taking a quick look at J Crew they have Merino v-neck on sale if you really want to complete the look you posted, but I'm not sure what material you're looking at or price limit you have: https://www.jcrew.com/p/mens/categories/clothing/sweaters/pullover/merino-wool-v-neck-sweater/AD337?display=standard&fit=Classic&color_name=hthr-metal&colorProductCode=AD337

and yes, i'd also agree that skinny chinos w/ a v-neck is a very dated look
hahaha I get your point about the nitpicking. I'll def look into the gray then. I don't know much about formal wear enough to know what's dated, but I think it's okay enough for a single occasion 🤷🏻♀️.
Thank you for your input, by the way. I appreciate your time!
as someone who ends up needing to wear a decent amount of v-neck-over-button-ups for work, I'd say your best bet if you're stuck with a black sweater would be swap out the pants for a dark gray trouser, ideally with a straighter cut than those chinos and maybe with a pattern, like windowpane or glen check. Black sweaters can be pretty tricky in general. Otherwise, what the other person said and just go for a gray sweater - I'd argue you could go for a heavier weight than the standard thin merino if you want to try and look less dated
I'll keep that in mind. Thanks!
