ALSO How much do I spend on every day shoes?
lets start here: what style of shoes are you looking for?
I can tell you how much I have spent on my everyday shoes but also I am not you and I don't have your budget.
Probably leather loafers or some kind of oxford or something
BTW I am also working so replies might be slow
probably 1461s
I had a pair of normal ankle height docs and they lasted me a while
but they're all worn out at the tip and sole
have you thought of getting them resoled?
the thing is, with doc boots they can look cool worn out, but not so much dress shoes and 1461s so thats what Im worried about
no they're super fucked, trust me
I want to move on, I had a nice time with the boots
What is your budget?
that's the question
what is a suitable budget for every day shoes?
I'm not rich
its pretty hard to recommend a budget without knowing your personal financial circumstances
if you were wearing shoes everyday, I think the vast majority would recommend rotating around 2-3 pairs at least for one (which I think you mentioned people saying before)
what do you mean rotating?
like changing through three pairs every week?
price also depends on the materials/construction/country of production/brand etc which may determine longevity or how they look when they become worn but generally wont affect the immediate usability of any shoe
like changing through three pairs throughout the month
however you feel like changing them
but not wearing the same shoe everyday
I wore my docs every day aside from formal events
I wanna get another pair but 1461s but I dont want to spend that much you see
so IDK what to do
I might end up just buying some cheap loafers or something
I know this is a silly question
and it's out of my price range
but are timbs worth it?
I don't know much about timbs
but let me try to put this in a new perspective
Why are ugly blocky sneakers so trendy
and asics and stuff too
weird hyper sport bullshit
you can spend $100 well or you can spend $100 poorly. So its hard to say just spend x amount of money and you'll have good shoes
its easier to say I have $x to spend, whats the best way I can spend it
I see
timbs might not be out of your budget if you get them used
I might save up
they seem like a good every day shoe
but so do 1461s
you can also get 1461s used
for less
what is your shoe size
I wouldn't do that because they're probably molded to someone else's feet
I'm fine with that stuff man, no worries about it
I do wanna talk about something with you
about these overstylized sneaker trends
can you send some example pics?
not sure what you mean by overstylized
stuff like this
or old new balance shoes from the early 2000s
its all over cluttered and weird looking
and generic pair of asics
makes you look like a sports coach at a high school
might not fit your style, but might fit someone elses!
I dont know
i know plenty of people whose style that shoe would fit
these overstylized sneakers look so ugly, I don't think I've ever seen them being pulled off well
probably because I hate the sneakers themselves so my belief system aligns with the fact that they cannot look good with anything
its also possible that you havent seen them with worn with everything
from what it seems, they are really far from your aesthetic
No it's that the sneaker themselves I loathe
You can make them fit with something and it still be ugly
I don't agree with you at all
That's fair
my sneaker collection is very simplistic
I'm just not on the over stylized trend
right, but why spend your energy loathing something because it doesn't fit in your wardrobe?
I don't
I was just curious about how this trend came about
^
I don't spend active energy hating it
it's passive
there's a lot of weird trends that I just don't understand
probably because people like them. sometimes as a statement piece, sometimes because they have maximalist aesthetics, or sometimes for a thousand other reasons
people end up hating it later on anyway for some reason
trends are so fickle
if they are designed by a certain designer that they like, they might wear them as a piece of outward facing expression of their taste
half of modern trends are born out of irony now which is odd
we never had ironic trends in the past
you better touch wood
fashion historians are among us
Fashion historians better touch grass brutha
we had plenty of ironic trends in the past
Really?
Even the 60s and 70s?
also you are making some crazy generalizations
the past goes way past the 60s
and yes im sure then too
Oh, could you give me an example?
the song yankee doodle is about someone mocking aristocrats
and putting a feather in his cap to ironically mock them
I thought we were talking about clothing
a feather
that song is about clothing
that all you got xD
I'm 99% certain we didn't invent irony
Nobody said that
it just seems irony is more present now
in fashion trends
I think part of what you are experiencing is the more rapid changes in culture that are happening today due to globalization
What kind of sneakers are you into?
minimalist? maximalist?
fashion trends themselves moved slower in days in which there werent new materials to use, ideas of others to see, etc
I have lots of different stuff
I'll send some examples 2 secs
I like buying really cheap white leather tennis shoes
non descrip gray man shoes
think like lacoste
they go with literally everything
just a few examples
lots of variety for different kinds of outfits
simple and clean ones and then ones with more color/texture
I like the top right
not big on high-sport shoes
okay, but other people are
including me
there's nothin wrong with that
sorry if it made you feel like I was saying you're wrong
no, dont worry
i know im not wrong for liking what i like
How much can you afford?
Do you like high top white connies ?
I dont know man I'll figure it out ig
I'll probably end up either buying timbs, 1461s, or cheap leather loafers
What do timbs look like when they're used a lot? because docs look good when highly used but I'm scared timbs dont
Lmgtfy
there he goes speaking welsh again
hey
Welsh is a beautiful language
Did you find a good picture mate?
Yn anfodus na, dwi'n rhy brysur i wneud dy waith.
Ah
the Cymru gentleman
Nid oes angen yr erthygl bendant. Jyst "Cymru" yn digon.
Ond dwi'n credu yr wyt yn meddwl "Cymraeg".
Correct
I don't know much Welsh
but my family is
Dwi ddim yn siarad Cymraeg
Well I found out
they look fucking horrible when worn in
Facts
All right. Apparently there’s been a long discussion on shoes and I missed it.
Do these count as square toed?
These count as ugly. But to answer your question, not really.
these ugly?
Are you looking for brogue shoes?
not quite
What are you looking for?
just looking at cheap dress-type shoes
That are on special
And to answer your question, yes. They look cheaply made.
well not cheap
they're cheap now
What’s your budget?
I dont know man
like
70 usd
Ok, do you have an Allen Edmonds store around your area?
No
I don't live in the states
I'm using this website
https://www.theiconic.com.au/men/
they deliver in one day
and they sell a large collection
Ok, do you know what your US Brannock measurement is?
I know my US foot size
10
Is that for sneakers?
no
oh
yes
and docs
Ok, do you have normal, wide, or narrow feet?
my feet are flat so on the wider side I guess
but I'm fine with normal shoes usually
Did you look at that site at all?
Nope.
I’m gathering the basic info first
Ok, for 100 AUS you’re not gonna get anything good from that site.
But, for that much money, you can try your luck with eBay given the info we have.
are brogue boots ugly?
If we’re targeting Allen Edmunds dress shoes, and given that you have flat feet, it means your best bet is to find an 8.5E sized shoe
Entirely depends on the boots
Like the ones I posted
I dislike them.
true
I'll just save up and get 1461s
@Jackfree If you are looking at that...
Have a look at McKinlay's of Dunedin
They are built like motherfucking tanks and are resoleable.
this thread might also come in handy; there's some discussion of people's daily rotation vs actual collection and similar https://discord.com/channels/1116793467654381685/1234534664149139538
also as someone who now buys primarily secondhand i also had an aversion to buying shoes at thrift/on ebay at first. i realized that sometimes people just buy things and don't use them and got better at looking for the telltale signs of wear (worn in sole, creasing at the upper, heel tread, fraying of laces, etc) and avoiding those
particularly with docs or other shoes that are hard to break in, people will often sell new ones just because they don't give it a week of time to break in. the pair of 1461s i wore were about $60 because someone tried them on once and deemed them uncomfortable
thanks for recommending Ebay
I found a lot of affordable second hands
but I just cant manage to find a good pair of cuban heels anywhere
and I made a thread for it
even on ebay
they're all either dress shoes, synthetic, or way over priced
I got redirected on the thread i made about it to a site that costs $600 in my country
the key is to be patient
a common sentiment in clothes is you can only get two of 'affordable, high quality, low effort to find'
if the goal is to spend less money then figure out a hardline budget (and start saving), make saved searches, wishlist what you find interesting, check different sites, make offers to people, etc. i'm not saying it's easy but if that's a priority to you then this is what it may take
Tricker‘s, Crockett & Jones, or Solovair all make quite nice looking brogues boots
I generally think that heftier brogue boots look better than slim and ‘dressier’ brogue boots
To add to this: a grail item of mine is Carmina Balmoral boots. I'm a fucking broke student. My goal is to save a dollar a day until I can afford them.
I project this will take at least three years.
I’m thinking about getting a pair of these but in a dark brown textured deerskin and no medallion
Carmina?
Stefano Bemer. I attended a trunk show and liked a lot of their dress shoes. I’m going to Florence next month and will probably stop by the shop and try some other lasts
