New installation help
I just installed Bazzite for the first time and basically my first linux experience. I used the Nvidia iso since I'm using Nvidia.
So ok, the GreenwithEnvy doesn't work since it can't detect my RTX 3070
Second, I'm getting a lot of glitching and delayed input with my keyboard. I'm not sure if this is normal but I'm assuming it's an nvidia thing.
Second, Steam won't open. I keep trying but it won't open. Hoping to get some help here.

At the bottom left or right (depending on if you chose KDE or GNOME) change from a Wayland session to a X11/Xorg section
soon X11 will be the default in the next ISO batch
Nvidia drivers do NOT like Wayland
this may change soon but for now, using the legacy windowing system is the best option for nvidia drivers
also after doing that to fix all of the other issues
open the terminal
ptyxis
and enter
copy the link that gets outputted here
steam.sh[15902]: Running Steam on fedora 40 64-bit
steam.sh[15902]: STEAM_RUNTIME is enabled automatically
setup.sh[15976]: Steam runtime environment up-to-date!
steam.sh[15902]: Steam client's requirements are satisfied
Steam is already running, exiting (command line was forwarded).
No text to send.
I just switched to x11 and yeah things aren't so glitchy anymore.
Ok this is working.
steam is already running
Yeah I just turned it on after logging out and changing the desktop to X11
I don't know why that's the fix either.
because nvidia drivers are closed source pieces of garbage on linux š
Shit.. ok...
like i said
My next quesiton, how do I get MangoHud with GUI?
it's preinstalled
you have to setup it manually with a launch option
MANGOHUD=1 %command%
for each game's launch option in steam
we used to include a tool that did this for you, but users kept breaking their config files using it
so we opted to remove it
steam gaming mode images have this all easy and done but nvidia can't work with steam gaming mode yetHmm.. ok. So that means every Steam game I have to put in launch options.
only AMD and Intel Arc GPUs
that you want mangohud for, yes
there could be an environmental variable set
but i dont want to recommend that to new users
I am now more inclined to just get an AMD card then. pfffttt.
because breaking things
yeah it's the better linux experience tbh
nvidia may be getting improved in the next 2 years
Sad well all i have is a Nvidia GPU for now.
but it is taking a while
and they don't help the situation tbh
difference between GPU vendors though
AMD and Intel have their drivers open source
Nvidia refuses to do that and all of the open source drivers available for Nvidia are reverse engineered by other people
Nvidia executive decisions for linux is mostly intended for machine learning and server workstations rather than desktop
I see... so only now has the community allowed it to make it happen.
Ok so my new issue. Audio.
I own a Asus Xonar card.
And so far I've only configured it to work with the front panel audio. But somehow back panel doesn't work.
i don't have a clue
Hence I can't use my speakers. Any fix for this?
Yeah I can now feel and tell how Nvidia is really not idea here.
Well, at least things are working. Audio is only working via front panel and again I don't know why.
For now, I'll try enjoying Helldivers 2.
Which MangoHud is the same as Preset 2 of the steam deck?
thats a config file you edit
steam deck literally just has presets based off of that config file
Ok how do I make Helldivers 2 run? It's not running.
Keeps crashing on startup.
enable rebar and 4g decode in bios. or rebase to
ostree-image-signed:docker://ghcr.io/ublue-os/bazzite-nvidia:40-20240502
until next kernel release if you do not have rebar or 4g decode in biosrebar is enabled.. wait... I'll double check...
how do I rebase?
rpm-ostree rebase thelinkijustprovided
if you are using the gnome image just use that instead (same link, different name, same date)
keep in mind the system will not auto update to the next build when you rebase to a specific tag like this, and you will have to rebase back to :stable
to get updates again
also keep in mind, rpm-ostree has no progress barHalf of my games also look like this...
you just need to wait for it to finish
go into steam settings and enable steam play for all titles
one day steam will remove the whitelist
maybe
f**ing....
lets be honest, they will forget
ugh... Why is Steam Deck so easy...
oh im sure they already did
Ahahhaha!
forgot what? /s
well for starters it's tuned for 1 device and valve removed the proton whitelist by default
š¤£
F** it.. XD
Anyways.... Is there something wrong with the current stable?
To a point that it screwed up one game. I'm trying another for the moment.
Maybe FFVII Remake We'll see.
kernel bug that causes a lot of games to not work unless you have rebar enabled
isn't that only with AMD?
which sucks for me because my system doesnt have rebar š
because they broke memory management in the kernel
snowstorm has a nvidia gpu
oh same
AH... I see... weird. I'm on a B550 and my Windows Nvidia panel states Rebar is enabled.
So I'm sure Rebar is enabled. But still Helldivers 2 doesn't work..
I'll rebase then.
doesnt have to be just amd, might me generic thing, havent tested with nvidia but helldivers should just work @nickname and the crash tends to be because of rebar atm
that makes sense
yeah follow the rebase command hikari linked
Rebasing....
Wait... do you think Helldivers is bugged because of rebar or is this just a Bazzite thing?
kernel thing, every system with the 6.8.9 kernel is affected (think thats the kernel number on stable)
Cause it also crashes normally in Windows for me. As a very random thing.
well I rebased since I updated mine.
If I want to go back to stable, how?
Just in case.
same command but
:stable
at the end instead of :40-date
Ok. I take note of this.
In case of future issues with Bazzite
if an update breaks bazzite you can always just reboot and select the
ostree:1
entry in the bootloader
that will boot back to your previous image then you can do rpm-ostree rollback
roll back to the booted entrywe need an upstream emoji or sticker
we get blamed for too much stuff that isn't our doing š
desktop linux is a billion different components glued together
I see.. Well. It's alright. Getting this kind of stuff to work is all part of the road.
a river formed like an arrow pointing up
Restarting... hold on.
Ah... now steam isn't working again. š¦
Yeah Steam's not working again...
Yup steam's not working right again. I'm on X11 after the rebase
rm -r ~/.local/share/Steam
(this will remove your installed games, if you want to avoid that then you can do mv ~/.local/share/Steam ~/.local/share/Steam.old
instead and move the games to the new folder steam makesActually... for some reason...that's not it.
When I click steam, what only comes up is the steam icon on the bottom right.
I went in it to go to big picture mode.
Then I exited big picture mode to open the normal.
So ok... now the weird part...
All my storage drives are not detected... again...
Nope.. rebase didn't work. Helldivers 2 still won't run.
ok different issue on nvidia then if you have steam play enabled for all titles
Yeah....
It's enabled for all titles
unsure what causes it to crash for you then š¤
Using GE 9
no need for cursom proton for helldivers
I tried experimental too.
try nothing or proton experimental
Nope. Experimental didn't work.
VII Remake also didn't work.
try not forcing a proton version then
i avoid using GE proton unless it is neccessary
Nope.
No Proton is working.
ok idk why it wont work for nvidia then
Actually.... no game is working.
Which is super weird.
FFVII, FFVIII, Helldivers, nothing.
are they on a different drive
Yes
...
All of them.
As in All of them.
Why?
was that the drive you used on windows
because linux and windows have different filesystems
proton and NTFS do not work
Uh... shit.. yes.
it's highlighted in our gaming guide lol
Uh...
so now what?
I heard from the steam deck linux channel they said it would work alright.
I'm assuming just not on bazzite... I guess...
no in general
proton does NOT work with NTFS
it is not supported
games will need to reinstalled and the drive should be reformatted to ext4 or btrfs
Ok.... I'm assuming no workarounds?
read the gaming guide
there is 1 workaround listed but it may have other issues
Like?

scroll to NTFS drive
Welp... good thing it's a 1TB drive.
I'll just copy it... I guess.. that's possible right?
you can copy the steamapps folder yes, the drive/partition just cant be ntfs
people use hacky workarounds to get ntfs to "work" but it has other issues
What's the hacky workaround and what issues does it have?
not going to tell but it will redirect proton prefixes to a different drive and it will be a mess to manage, especially if you have no idea how things work
I see... will proton ever support NTFS?
That is... if the team behind proton is doing anything about it...
never, literally cannot support the paths used in proton/wine
and if you force it to work you get a corrupted filesystem
Sheep ok.. welp.. good thing I bought a 1TB SSD then.
Oh and... right... any guide to modify MangoHud?
Helldivers working now...
mangohud documentation
you wanted the horizontal bar so
then add this to presets.conf
Thanks. I'm assuming that with MangoHud=2, it will use that?
no
it sets the layout to preset2
when you enable mangohud
Hmm... it says preset 2
Hmm.. the temperature in mangohud green with envy, is that the GPU hotspot?
Cause I know there's more than 1 sensor in a GPU.
Oh and what filesystem do I use to make sure both Windows and linux can read from that works with Proton? I'm thinking of converting ONE drive.
In this thread Kyle is recommending using a BTRFS drive that is shared between Bazzite and Windows https://discord.com/channels/1072614816579063828/1211710299946885160/1211710668533665822
because that is the preset number used on steamdeck so if you had a HTPC build it would use that preset when you set gamemode to use Preset 2
not rocket science š
I see.
Thanks.
Kinda questioning the GPU temps though... is this the hotspot or a different sensor? I know mine has 2 sensors for GPU temp
no idea
I think it's hotspot though. It's quite high.
Preset.conf not working btw... hmm.
presets.conf
not Preset.conf
oh.
capitalization matters and plural matters
I keep forgeting case sensitivity. Thanks.
The whole NTFS thing... if I use Lutris and the prefix folder is in my root drive, does that work or no?
This is for outside steam games.
that will work
So it's just in steam then... I see.
the issue is in lutris too but they offer an option to keep prefixes off the ntfs drive, by just having it elsewhere
steam doesnt and you need to use hacky workarounds which valve does not recommend either which is what we follow
Understanding the Steam Deck environment and my experience with it....
So the main issue with NTFS and Proton is solely at where the prefix folder is going to be?
pretty much as NTFS will break if you have a filepath containing
:
as it is an illegal character for the filesystem
if you do use a workaround to get ntfs to work, it will also invalidate every game related issue you open with us
and even having a path with :
in it can break the filesystemOk.. so that means I can use Lutris safely.
So long as my prefix folder is set to my root drive.
I think I get it then.
prefixes take up a lot of space
I know...
I have a steam deck... it's pretty big already.
Until I realize... this is Proton's way of emulating a Windows environment.
looks at my 700gb of proton prefixes š
Mine's about 10-20gb of proton.
prefix.
its a reference to a bug i had once with steam many years ago
let me find it
wtf...
Anyways... I'm gonna enjoy Linux... I just had one of the best sessions of Helldivers.
The FPS difference...for real.. it exists.
Went to windows... sad that it doesn't recognize my Linux drive. Oh well.
What was the FPS difference between Bazzite and Windows?
After one round, 10-20 for me. But that's not what I kept my eye on the entire time. It's the smoothness. Frame time graph shows everything. It's stable and less stutters or drops for that matter. It's like playing on the deck. Which is exactly what I expected.
And I'm on 2k res.
My only disappointment in Linux, is that I can't get my speakers to work. Only my headphones.
I'm using an Asus Xonar sound card. And from my troubleshooting, it only detects the front panel connectors (which is connected to my soundcard)
While the rear (speakers) aren't detected. If you guys know anyone who found a solution to this, let me know. Internet tells me I need some ALSA thing.
alsamixer
Yeah that one. Have no idea how to get it for bazzite. sudo apt didn't work.
preinstalled
type
alsamixer
in the terminal
i cant tell you the rest
it's basically trial and error and understanding what you're doing
personally dont have this issue
but it's most likely playing around with the output settingsHmm...
Trying it now.
Huh... That worked... But now I'm confused on how to get it back to my headphones... Great. Lol. Thanks for that.
Ok now I know how to work it... f... Me.
Is there an app for alsamixer?
Or is it only through the terminal?
Oh and multichannel doesn't work.
Might be my speakers though but eh... Nvm. It's an old speaker. Doesn't even use all ports at the back. All good.
Question, not really gonna do it but... How do I format the drive with Linux in it? Just in case. It doesn't show on disk manager in windows.
Typically you just boot a linux live usb of Mint/Debian/Fedora and use gparted or kde partition manager (as you cannot edit the partition of the currently booted machine)
Oh... So I need it in Linux live.. the one with a desktop environment right?
Good to know then.
Yeah unfortunately Atomic Desktops don't have live sessions at the moment. You can get into a root terminal from the Bazzite installer but partitioning via terminal is a little too challenging for me. Much Much easier with Gparted
Good thing I have a mint bootable. Lol. Thanks for that. Not gonna do it, I just needed to know.
If you boot mint and you remove any atomic distro partition, also remove the fedora folder from the efi folder as this is a bug in the Fedora installer else it will fail with a random code 1 error, if you try and re-install
What if I just remove all partitions in the drive?
That would work too as it will remove the efi partition with the issue
Cool Just in case I need to do this in the future.
The nice thing with Bazzite and other Atomic desktops is that you don't really need to re-install, so hopefully you won't need that information š
Unless I want to change distros lol. But yes you do have a very good point with that.
How do I uninstall Cooler Control?
I have no idea what that is. Do you have a link to it?
It was installed via terminal.
ujust install cooler....
something like that.
I'm guessing
You'll need to restart for it to take effect fyi, you can run
You'll need to restart for it to take effect fyi, you can run
ujust --choose
and see what any of the ujust scripts are doingI mean removing it from my PC.
Yeah I looked at the script, those are the steps to uninstall it based off the steps to install it
Yeah didn't work.
sorry the `s where not supposed to be here
Try that
Trying...
That worked. Thanks. Didn't need it anymore.
Everytime I restart, I have to input my password to view my other drives. how do I disable this authentication every time?

Also.. for some reason.. applying the fan curves on GreenWithEnvy are not working. This is why I needed to uninstall CoolerControl
uh what do I look for?
CTRL+F
type in
drive
It's just telling how to do partitions and mounting..
Not sure which one I'm supposed to look at.
that is literally the guide
you need to setup auto mounting and disable authentication for mounting them (if you want to mount/unmount without supplying password)
But it's telling me to format.. sad
we do not tell you to do that
if you are talking about this part
if it does not apply to you
skip it
their drive is NTFS
formatting applies unless they want to workaround all that shit with using a NTFS drive with proton
which have fun
fair
no no not that. Just to get rid of it asking for my password all the time.
but they just wanted to remove the authorization so skip it
oh
then follow the rest of the guide?
haha mounting drives on linux is funny
yea
skip the formatting part
GNOME disks is missing.
automounting drives and all the bullshit with is still an isssue
you're most likely on KDE then
so use kde partition manager unless you want to layer it and reboot but i hate recommending layering anymore (esp after the fiasco of the 40 upgrades)
then use kde partition manager as specified in the guide for kde images?
Hmm... Ok.
yeah there is a reason we provide the guide for both
I see.
Ok that's done.
make sure you test before rebooting
I reinstalled CoolerControl since GreenWithEnvy isn't working my fan curves... kinda sad really.
Yup... it's working after rebooting.
good
So I reinstalled CoolerControl and now This is what comes up... nothing.
I used systemctl enable already and... yeah...
Rebooted and yeah...
cant help you with coolercontrol, got nothing to use it on, also did you install it with the ujust?
as it should just work with that
Yes I used the same method to install it the last time. ujust.
I need the GPU fan curves to keep things cool.
This isn't working.
I don't know if it's a bug or not but I just lost my fan control curve. š¦
There's no way to make cooler control work again.
Some of the games I have are running at a fixed 60. When I have a 165 monitor with Vsync on. In windows they run at 90 or more. How do I fix this issue?
Display settings.
Monitor is most likely set to 60 hz
does X11 still have that problem with multi-monitor and different refresh rates
Yes and it's extremely hard to workaround (literally no documentation)
I did it once but forgot how
im not sure if they have a multi-monitor setup
but im putting that out there if they do and thats the issue
i know they're on nvidia and they're using X11
Yeah then they will be limited to the slowest monitor I believe
fyi this thread conversation moved to https://discord.com/channels/1072614816579063828/1238203564418007062 and yup op has a multimonitor setup
Sheep... for real? No uh... workaround?
Can confirm that removing the 1080p screen fixes the issue.
Any way to fix this so I can dual monitor setup?
use wayland, but obviously wait for nvidia to come out with their 555 driver
it's funny how nvidia only has proper support for a windowing system that is a rewrite of one from 1984
hope the 555 driver means something
just for the sake of nvidia users
When will that be and what's wayland?
they spent 10 years complaining that wayland devs wouldnt use their EGLStreams buffer api instead of what everyone (wayland, intel, amd, mesa, etc) agreed upon which was GBM
because if they used EGLStreams instead then nvidia would barely have to do anything
So based on my understanding... Nvidia didn't want to adjust to what everyone else agreed upon. So this is no doubt an nvidia issue. But... in 555 drivers they finally decided to use GBM?
But that still brings me the question as to.. what is wayland?
I think I heard of Mesa before.
no idea but from rumors 555 should bring explicit sync which should fix the major wayland issues with nvidia atm (flickering and slow xwayland apps)
the open source graphic stack in linux
https://www.mesa3d.org/
And wayland?
wayland is the display server
So what am I using now? Is it Wayland?
Cause I'm hearing of stuff like X11 and stuff about all this.
x11 and wayland are display servers
x11 being from the 80s
or is it 50s
either way its old as hell, and was designed to show an interface on printers
Oh shit.. so X11 is really old. That's why what I'm using right now is kinda buggy.
Ok... and the new drivers coming are expected to have Wayland support on given the rumors.
wayland is the new display server designed for the modern era
nvidia has just been super slow at adding support (as they wanted others to give them a handout and failed at it)
current drivers technically have wayland support, just with major issues
I'm assuming it's worse than what's on X11?
there is a reason we still ship x11 to nvidia users
Dang ok... now I wanna go amd. lol.
We'll see.. I might save money for it. But for real... if that's how it is... I'm begining to hate Nvidia right now.
I've been hating them for awhile actually.
all we can do is hope that 555 is good
We just don't know when that is.
Ok things are working just fine as of the moment. I highly doubt I will have questions unless it's a specific game not working correctly regardless of what protonDB says. Is there anything I need to note of as a new user outside as a Steam Deck user?
As for the Wayland thing, I hope 555 does fix it so I can get a better desktop experience.
I'm also assuming the number is tied to Windows drivers as it's currently 552 for Windows.
Or am I wrong with that? Either way, I'll play the patience game for this issue.
yeah but linux drivers release every 5th major version from experience
Guess it's soon then.

For outside steam games, my MangoHud is set to preset 1 and always preset 1. Any way for me to use Preset 2?
mkdir ~/.config/MangoHud && echo preset=2 >> ~/.config/MangoHud/MangoHud.conf
Yeah I already did that and it's still preset 1.
I even tried to modify preset 1 to my needed sensors, didn't work either.
Which is weird. I don't know why.
then you have a config overriding it
to replicate preset 2
add this to
.config/MangoHud/presets.conf
you would love the steam gaming mode bazzite images
too bad they don't work with nvidia GPUs yet
Yup this was done already. But the game I'm trying to get preset 2 on is still at preset 1. MangoHud.conf is at preset=2 and presets.conf has those. But if it's a game outside Steam, it doesn't work. I don't know why. Could it be my launch arguments?
Not sure then
Is there a way I can make a shortcut in my desktop that opens alsamixer in terminal directly so I don't have type it down?
I could make ptyxis open and run the application. Weirdly if you edit desktop shortcuts they randomly disappear so make the shortcut in another directory and drag it to the desktop
Works perfectly. Thanks.
Trying other launchers. Been at 0% since awhile ago. Is this normal?
Yeah that's definitely not normal. Let me see if I can reproduce
Not sure if it's on Battle.net side but it's pretty slow I think. I have a 400mbps connection too so it shouldn't take that long. Not sure what's going on though. It's the first 3rd party launcher I'm trying. Next will probably be Epic.
Are you using Lutris to install the client?
Yup
Tested it in a VM. It's downloading for me. You might need to close everything. Delete the ~/Games/battlenet folder and try again
But it failed to even start the client the first time around, so I a think the install process is glitchy
Looks promising
What the... how did it take you so fast?
I had the VM up and running already, in your case I suspect one of the battlenet background processes fell over so it wasn't actually downloading
Well I did what you said and it's REAALY slow.
Even downloading is slow for no reason at all.
If you do a speed test just check that you are getting your full internet speed. Also check your dns settings, I had a weird issue a while ago where my isp was taking forever to resolve links and it would fail sometimes which made everything slow. After switching to the google dns server (8.8.8.8) and cloudflare (1.1.1.1) in my router config.... I haven't had internet issues.
There is also a recent break in the seacom cable which might affect some internet activity depending where you are located in the world
i see. Thanks for that.
Ok so after gruesome 5 hours of downloading. D2R won't run the game.
I own D2R. let me see if I can figure out a work around
D3 worked fine last I tested it
You are on nvidia right? silly question... just read the chat history
My process so far was Lutris > Install Battle.Net > Through Battle.Net I installed D2R.
Same process I did on my Steam Deck. Dunno what happened.
I guess I'll confirm tomorrow... š
Yeah mine reached 200kb/s
Dunno why. ahahha. Thanks.
Hmmmm, well so much for trying to re-produce your issue...It just worked
Maybe try and add the game in lutris and launch it from that launcher (you shouldn't need to re-install)
Didn't work.. nothing coming out.
This is all there is and nothing's happening.
Settings.
More than 3 minutes now and it's still running nothing. I don't know why.
try right click and select "show logs" then try and launch the game
hope that helps.
Have you tried rebooting?
Yup. Didn't work.
In fact, some weird behaviors have been exhibited when installing the entire process for the entire day.
Like for one, the process itself would take up gigabytes of RAM.
It exceeded almost anything in my system.
Here is my log
I'm not getting the "Unable to read VR Path Registry from" errors but otherwise it looks the same
Did you install it at default path?
Yup all defaults
Did you install battle net separately?
I did
Is there a wine trick I'm missing?
Gonna restart again... just to make sure.
Did you try and install SteamVR at all?
Not sure. Might be better to play something else
Welp.. same thing anyways...
š„
I'm out of ideas
I'll try a few things then.
Sad how it doesn't work here but it does on the SD.
I wonder what I'm missing.
And it started working outta nowhere. -__-
really?
š„³ š¤Æ
Yeah...
So weird
F**in.. hell.
All I did was transfer the Game Folder ouside of the Battlenet folder.
Cause the default install path was on C:/Program Files
Based on what's in Battle.net that is.
So I tried something stupid.
So yeah... it's weird.
Ok well. enjoy š
You might as well play a bit after spending hours getting it to work
Thanks for the help. Yeah I'll do that... just to make sure. Haven't played this in awhile too.. since the... Blizzard debacle BS.
I'm just glad I'm not one of it's employees.
And you know what's weird... MangoHud works properly on this game.. but some games... not really. FFXIV keeps showing preset 1.
Ok after enjoying this for awhile. I think I'll try EGS next. Is there anything I need to know about installing EGS? Is it still using Heroic or do I use Lutris?
Cause there's an option in Lutris that I see.
I prefer to use heroic for EGS as it integrates really nicely
But Lutris should work too
I think I'll try the Lutris way then.
Since I already know how Heroic works.
Then after this, Ubisoft.
Does Kingdom Hearts work now btw? I know in Steam Deck, it doesn't.
No clue I don't own Kingdom Hearts to test.
I also don't do much emulation
not emulation exactly.
It's the PC release of KH3.
Or any KH.
From what I know... all the KH games do not work because they can't get pass FMV sequences.
Proton-GE or Wine-GE should help with that
Yeah, currently having an issue with it.
I've used both ProtonGE and WineGE. Game won't get pass the splash screen.
Oh this is KH3 btw. After the SE and Disney thing... Nothing... Complete black.
Is there an updated guide for this. I keep doing the mf-install thing that worked on my steam deck.
Have you tried enabling the Steam runtime with Proton-GE?
Uh... shit wait...
Can you confirm though if I need mf-install or not?
Nope didn't work. Even with mf-install on.
I don't think you need mf-install with Proton-GE
This is what I get with Proton Experimental
This won't even run.
this can barely get past the splash screen.
You may have corrupted your Proton installs by running mf-install
This is with Wine 8.26
I actually reinstalled them and still didn't work. And as far as I know, mf-install only affects the prefix folder.
I imagine you've tried deleting the prefixes?
Using Proton GE 7.20 or 7.54 (my steam deck proton for this)
For this game? Yes.
And yes, other games are still working.
Have you checked the logs while running it with Wine-GE?
For heroic, no idea how to show logs.
Settings > Log
That's all of it. Not sure what I'm missing.
Following the Steam Deck guide didn't work either.
I suspect it's an Nvidia thing again. It's the only difference right now between the two.
You could try disabling esync/fsync as well
Nope. Same behavior.
This might help... but the last time I had a running issue, I had to bring D2R out of the Battlenet folder to run.
I did the same for KH3
I took it out of the Heroic folder but this time around it runs but not past the splash screen.
I also tried installing corefonts and faudio.
As what others have done. Same outcome.
Same with vc2019 and all 3 of them.
i will save you the trouble, its a clusterfuck on linux and weird unexplainable issues like you boot the game once with a wine version, it works
you shut down the game and boot it again, it does not work
switch version and boot, it fails, switch back to what you used before, it works (for 1 launch) again
kingdom hearts is one of those games i just ended up going "fuck it, youre banished to the windows gamestream box in the basement, think about your actions"
And yet for some reason I got it to work on the deck but yeah I'm seeing that now. Oh well... Forget it... I guess it's one of those. I'll just play it on PS5 lol.
wine client error:2c8: write: Bad file descriptor
wine client error:2e0: write: Bad file descriptor
What does this usually mean?
It's a Lutris error when I'm trying to get Ubisoft Connect to run.
Honestly, btw, at this point... I'm not blaming Steam or Linux for these goddamn 3rd party launchers. I tried other games in Epic, they seem to work.
I just don't know why they exists...
I think it's when wine tries to write data to a file and it doesn't have permission to do so. I might be wrong though
Hmm.... does that mean there's something wrong with my storage device? Do I need to set permissions for the app?
Cause Ubisoft connect is very slow.
Worse than 1fps if anything.
Nope not a device storage issue
Are you searching for the game via lutris and installing it that way?
Uh.. no. Like Battlenet I installed Ubisoft connect straight. No game.
I do have Ubisoft games in Steam.
But I have some in my Ubisoft account too. Looking to see if they work here in bazzite.
I already uninstalled the Ubisoft Connect launcher though. I guess it doesn't work right. It's like 1 frame per 3 mintues.
Your thoughts on Linux support?
I'd give it a few weeks/days and check protondb and see if anyone has had success
They'll probably deck verify it.
If it's deck verified then it will typically run on Bazzite
But yeah a very populare game like Kingdom Hearts will get verified very quickly
Man thanks for this... I was going crazy as none of my games would run for long and they'd crash seemingly out of no reason š
hopefully new kernel release soon will have the fix
its fixed upstream but last time i checked it was not merged yet
the games runs good on linux (when you can get it to run, which is a nightmare of itself)
steam will transcode (to my knowledge) the cutscenes so they will work with proton, those were the issue on the EGS versions
but the act of getting them to reliably run is what was problematic as you could launch the game and it would work, close it and open it again and it would fail silently without errors
so yeah, chances are high for it to work on linux
Good to know. I wanna play these on the Deck dangit! Though I'll admit, I'll might have to purchase this for the 4th time. Lol. I purchased Kingdom Hearts collection in like 2 consoles 1 EGS and if I include this.. it's the 4th.
don't know why I can't pin that. Very useful command though. And @HikariKnight, if you can, do let us know when it's safe to use the stable branch. I feel like it'll be awhile with the current kernel having issues. Got the same issues as him. So I'm sticking to this for awhile.
Kingdom Hearts in Steam Store. Controller support so far reveals it will work with Steam Input. I know the Steam Deck is using this input. So fingers crossed it's deck supported.
that is good because steam input did not work when you ran it through epic/heroic with the game added to steam (bought it specifically to try make it run as people had issues with it, ended up making 1 video about it and deciding any further voodoo to get it running is not worth it as it is cursed enough), literally the only game i bought on EGS and it is the last game i will buy on EGS.
i did complete KH3 and remind, did not re-complete the other 2 as i couldnt be bothered with the effort it took on KH3 to even try get it running š¤£
will be good to play through them for once though.
i will try to remember to drop something in here or in announcements, just waiting for kernel to be updated so i can test š
For years, I've only played them at my desk on my PS. When I got it on EGS, it's when I wanted it give it a go for the SD. But only KH3 worked. I don't know why the same shit doesn't work on Bazzite. So now that it's on steam... there's 0 reason for it not to be deck verified which hopefully will also be Linux supported for people running SteamOS on their personal desktops. Not to mention... cloud saving... I can sync my playthroughs even better. WEE!
i own all of them on the PS3 (except KH3)
i played through KH3 but ended up installing it on the gamestream server (which is windows) and just stream the game
I have the full collection on PS4. Partial collection on EGS though. As for my PS3 it's only the 2 HD remasters.
BTW, I heard 555 beta is out. When it's official, is it possible to just update the nvidia drivers?
At the moment, I'm assuming the nvidia drivers are part of the bazzite branch or something.
automatic when we publish a new build after it hits stable in rpmfusion
How's the new Nvidia driver? Any update to it?
It's still in Beta, so it would be 2-4 weeks or more before it lands here. However, the people who have tested it are impressed so far
Also, does gamescope work on multi-monitor setup?
That I have... no clue lol
Nice. That's good news then.
Yeah it doesn't seem to be working when I have it on multi-monitor. Or it might just be me. I hope the new driver will fix these issues though. Guess I'll wait for it for awhile.
no, 1 monitor only, you can change which monitor with an environment variable
How do I do that?
by reading documentation?
https://universal-blue.discourse.group/docs?topic=37#how-do-i-specify-the-correct-monitor-for-gaming-mode-to-use-htpc-only-7
Universal Blue
Steam Gaming Mode Overview (Handheld/HTPC)
Steam Deck images have it disabled due to causing issues with MangoHud. It will be added back when these issues are resolved. You will have to rebase to the Unstable branch. More information can be found here.
Thanks.
Ok so I did that and ran gamescope on my game of choice, in this case Fallout 4. Other games didn't really need it. I'm getting an error code.. something about Vulkan. So the game somewhat runs like a sildeshow. Which is weird. But it runs smoothly with 165 fps (my full RR) when I disable my other monitor. Am I missing something? I need the other monitor when running the game.
I can't keep switching out. I'm assuming this is an X11 thing then.
So I went to try and use BTRFS as a file system for both Bazzite and Windows, but on Windows with WinBtrfs, it doesn't work even with Secure boot off. Anything I'm missing on the Windows side for this to work?
What error do you get? Is the drive not visible at all?
Drive is NOT visible at all.
No error but the BTRFS driver is seen and installed in my device manager in Windows.
Using Windows 10 with secure boot off btw.
Is it an internal or external drive?
Internal
Here's a clearer view of what's seen in Windows. Btrfs is on the device Manager. I'm supposed to have 4 detected storage devices. The 4th one being my Bazzite drive. Which isn't seen in Windows. I checked in Bazzite what the file system is and it's Btrfs.
That's weird that it doesn't show up at all. Let me check my windows 10 install
go on.
I used WinBtrfs
Oh and... secure boot is off for me so yeah. I did the troubleshooting section as well... still no avail.
I went the chocolately root. Ran this in admin command line
choco install winbtrfs
and the drive just popped up in My ComputerI did not use chocolately and as far as I know I don't have chocolately
I used the default method.
Using the btrfs.ini
I used Chocolately and it didn't work.
Is it possible that it's because I'm using other drives?
What do you mean by other drives?
I got 4 physical drives in total.
Either way... I'm assuming I'm just missing something I do not notice.
2 nvme SSDs and 2 HDDs.
Ok so... these are the partitions on my drive. Is that lock the reason why it's not readable in Windows? Do I have to make a partition that isn't locked like that?
It's that one btrfs I'm trying to access.
In Windows.
I have the same with the locks and I can mount them in Windows 10
Wierd... so now I'm baffled as to why I can't.
How many physical drives do you have anyways?
I see 4 but I'm nost sure if yours is really 4.
Only 2 internal drives. It's a laptop.
Hmm.... What's the drive letter on your Windows?
i have 10 drives and cannot reproduce, btrfs just loads the drives and partitions automatically š¤
Even without Windows drivers for btrfs or ext4, the drive should show up in the Disk Management utility in Windows, because it has a compatible partition table. The fact the physical drive itself doesn't show up in Windows but shows up in Bazzite tells me this might be related to your motherboard. Consult your motherboard's manual for any gotchas related to SATA or NVMe storage. Some motherboards disable some of the SATA ports when an NVMe drive is installed, or will automatically disable a certain NVMe slot when booting from a certain other slot, weird stuff like that.
You can also check in the UEFI for any related settings, boot order, slots being enabled/disabled, etc.
I'll check. But if that is the case, then why is my Windows drive and all physical drives detected on my Bazzite OS?
Yes it's seen on Bazzite.
These are my Bios settings. I don't run Raid drives at the moment. So the SATA mode is AHCI.
This is in Bazzite. All my drives are detected. So it makes me really wonder why the Windows one won't load the bazzite drive and the bazzite drive can load windows.
The only thing said about my m.2 slots.
Welp I tried everything. Even the USB installer of Windows detects the Bazzite drive. I even tried doing a repair install and it still doesn't appear. Guess my only option is going Win 11 but if I do so, I'm basically going to hate it. Win 11 is the OS I am trying to avoid.
Hae you tried removing the btrfs driver and starting again. Also if you put btrfs on an external flash drive or ssd drive does that get read?
I tried removing it but it always gives me an error.
As for the USB thing, no I haven't tried but I think I'll try that one next to see if a BTRFS drive can be read.
I tried running this.
Always ends up with that.
when you in powershell, try run
cmd
then when you in cmd then run hat same commandWhat happens if you install chocolately and run the following?
So ok.
For reference I still haven't run the code yet.
And the old installation of BTRFS is still there since I can't uninstall it.
I installed Chocolatey
if you right click on the driver and click on uninstall? Does that also not work?
This is what I get from choco.
I have not tried this one.
And if you open My Computer, still no btrfs drives showing up?
Nope... just 3/4 drives showing up.
Then try btrfs on a flash drive and see if that works. That will eliminate whether the driver works or not and then it's just an issue of it working with your internal drives
That's what I'm going to do now.
Gonna format a drive on Linux.
Note that I can see my Bazzite drive from disk management even before I installed the driver.
If you click on Menu >> Action >> Rescan disks it still doesn't pick up?
For reference... I made a USB with BTRFS on it.
It doesn't even appear here.
But you can see in my KDE it does.
All my physical drives appear in KDE including the USB.
Does the BTRFS USB work in windows?
It's restarting wait.
Yup.
Ah so at least we know that the driver is working
That's a good thing, I think you'll need to google "nvme and ssd drives not showing up in disk management" and see what comes up
I did that. And someone's solution was repair install which I did and just did yesterday and it still didn't show up.
What's funny is... the Bootable USB with Win10 on it CAN detect the drive.
But onced installed, it can't.
I tried reordering the boot priorty to read both Drives before the windows manager, and it still didn't show up.
if you go into device manager it isn't showing any missing drivers?
None. rescanning disk didn't work as well
š§ hmmm was hoping something would be broken there... would be an easy fix. Well I'm out of ideas, sorry. You might be able to post something on one of the Windows help forums, for further assistance with that
Yeah... I assume that would be the case.
Can confirm that it is detected by a bootable USB drive.
So weird.
Is it possible that the reason why it won't show up is that I didn't initialize it first? Cause what I did with this drive was, I installed Bazzite straight after placing it on the M.2 slot. I never made it go through Windows.
Unlikely, then the drive would still be showing up in Windows and show as uninitialized.
that might do it if it doesnt have any mbr or gpt data and instead had btrfs data.
i believe btrfs is one of those filesystems you can put directly on the block device for some reason.
essentially the btrfs disk that wont show up would not have a number, it would be something like sdd and not sdd1
or nvme0n not nvme0np1
Really?? You can use it without a partition table??
think it was something like that, i accidentally done it myself but not tried using that in windows
but i cant remember if it was btrfs or another filesystem, it was one of the systems you can use to setup raid and i know btrfs has that capability
so that means if I want things to work, I have to erase my partitions and start from 0 with bazzite then.
But i have to initialize it on windows first then install bazzite right?
For Btrfs, using a partition table is recommended to avoid issues with other tools and operating systems
this sounds like it supports being used without a partition table
first confirm that the disk in question has no partition numbers like i showed
the bazzite installation itself should however be handled by anaconda which forces a partition tableThis is what's seen on KDE
Here. What I'm trying to read in Windows that doesn't show up
that one has a partition table
p1-p3
so thats not the case then
And the kingston isn't even showing up in device manager here. It's as if windows can't see it
But the windows 10 bootable installer can.
i have been keeping an eye on this thread and i have never seen anything like this and even i am a bit stumped as to why this is the case
I tried formatting a USB with BTRFS and it can be read so it's not the driver as well.
not showing up in this pc i could understand because its read only
but device manager...
I tried shrinking as well.
I know right. Every information outlet I check, people always tell me to check Device Manager.
I even updated my BIOS to the latest to see if it was a bug with the BIOS but nope.
My motherboard is currently the B550M DS3H rev 1.5
Also installed all of it's drivers.
If you're also wondering, DISKPART in CMD can't detect it.
A 3rd Party tool such as HDD Sentinel can't detect it either.
all I have left is have you tried switching the two NVMe drives? just to see what happens
or putting the one Windows doesn't detect in a USB enclosure
I wish I had the enclosure. But I can confirm that I have not tried any hardware changes to the matter.
But for a checklist of things done
* Choco Install method DONE
* Normal Install method DONE
* Repair Install Windows DONE
* Create BTRFS drive DONE
* Shrinking the drive DONE
* Reading it in other Bootable installers DONE
* Diskpart check DONE
* Update BIOS DONE
Guess I'll be trying some hardware stuff then.
Removing Hard drives didn't work.
that is so weird
if you do have the time i would at this point just try re-initialize the drive if i really wanted access to it in windows, not much else we can try :/
Yeah that eliminates the drive letter thing too.
That means wiping it right?
yeah
annoyingly
since i have no idea what can cause this
Hmm... True...
i would just wipe it try put ntfs on it and see if windows detects it, if yes try btrfs no bazzite
if it detects that then reinstall bazzite
did you swap the nvme drives or just remove the HDDs?
We've pretty much proven the driver is working by formatting a USB to Btrfs.
I removed the HDDs. Swapping would've given the same results. The point of removing it was too see if the driver will auto mount the drive but nope.
yeah but i am wanting to just see if the controller or something doesnt like btrfs on that one drive or something because this issue is so odd
the HDDs are different from the NVMe drives though?
Guess this means deleting the entire partition table using Linux mint bootable then.
My thinking is if there's some obscure weird behavior in the motherboard related to which NVMe slot is being booted from, swapping the drives might cause some kind of change
even if the manual doesn't say anything about it
yes if you really want to get to the bottom of this and attemt to have the bazzite homedir accessible from windows. not something we recommend though. as i have said i never seen this issue ever so it could be caused by anything and we are all grasping for straws to find out what causes this
If that was the case then none of my bootable USBs would detect it as well.
The problem is.. it does..
But very well...
I'll have to grab some files on my Linux drive before doing all this.
If nothing changes with that then I really will be out of ideas aside from reformatting
It's been only one month so far of using it and I do like Bazzite so far.
I also tried changing the boot order. Didn't work.
Turned on CSM... didn't work. So yeah... if ground 0 helps, I don't mind. Bazzite ain't that difficult to install.
weird behavior like this is often some physical edge case, like one case I heard of where a system couldn't boot cold, but after the CPU heated up, the thermal expansion allowed a pin to make contact and then it would run fine
Oh and one thing I notice on the 2nd nvme drive. My Bootable Windows Installer doesn't detect the free space.
It's 0 mb.
CSM should always be off
it is a performance loss to have it on
and only needed for early 2000s systems
That makes sense, it's the partition table that says how big the partitions are, but it would need to understand the file system to know how much free space there is, and the bootable installer isn't going to have a btrfs driver
Yeah I tried it just in case it was a booting issue with Windows. Turns out.. it's not.
well it's been 1 month so... Alright... ground 0 it is.
sorry i couldnt be of more help
It's alright. No one has a solution so the entire thing is really weird. I'm still getting some things out of Bazzite.
Ok an update. I backup my Bazzite files that I needed then proceeded to clearing the partition.
Windows still won't detect a clean NVME drive with 0 partitions.
So I figured... What the heck... I'm gonna try @Onihikage suggestion of swapping.
I put that kingston at the other slot and...
It also doesn't work!! Holy shit wtf!!
New things on the checklist:
* Removing all partitions DONE
* Swapping Drives DONE
Gotta admit, this is worse than troubleshooting Bazzite. Wee!
Drive's haunted
And it's a Microsoft issue too.
Good job Microsoft.
Yup. I'd say this is the weirdest shit I've ever experienced.
Installer says, I see you. Linux mint says, I see you. Bazzite says, I see you. My win10 drive says, who this n**?
Damn this windows installation.
Decided not to use this extra NVME for awhile since I can't use it on Windows at the moment anyways. Instead I'm going to use this on a different device where I'll install Bazzite on it.
Oh well... Guess we can call this ordeal a Microsoft issue.
sidestream issue? š¤£
Lol.. anyways...
I just instealled Bazzite on a different device.
This time with Gaming mode on but....
This is a laptop
Not my steam deck or anything close to a handheld.
And when I boot in Bazzite, it's empty.
I think it's the Gaming mode, how do I boot out of gaming mode?
Cause it's all black.
See if you can get into a TTY terminal session with CTRL+ALT+F2.
Oh sure... The Btrfs works on the laptop... Damned desktop...
Either way... I'm now having problems trying to get Gaming mode to work.
It's really just STUCK at the bazzite logo. After verifying, it's just stuck there.
Then at times, it would disappear.. an input carat appears...for about a second then it's back to bazzite logo
š well just glad that you getting to that large nvme drive somewhere.
Lol. Yeah... Decided not to use it on the desktop.
For realsies... I have a better experience on the laptop than I did on the desktop.
Is it because of the GPUs?
I feel like that's the reason why.
Not much of tweaking on the non-gaming mode side. All I did was just... do the automount right install games... setup mangohud... I already tried 3 games and it's been quite a blast. Only game that doesn't work.. I guess... is Helldivers 2.
Do you have an AMD gpu on the laptop?
It is an AMD GPU.
RX 6550M
I wanted to make sure I got one with AMD on it.
The wayland experience is better than the x11 experience
Looking at your first post. Yup Nvidia with X11 vs AMD with Wayland.
I thought this was Plasma. I used the normal bazzite distro.
But yeah no Wayland on nvidia
