What do you think is better for your career: full name for professionalism or shorthand name for relationship building e.g Dave rather than David, Steve rather than Steven, Raj rather than Rajesh, American nickname over native born name

I don't know if that really makes a difference for career. I wouldn't say the difference between a Dave and David or Bill and William or even Raj and Rajeesh hurt your sense of professionalism. Personally, I use an English nickname to avoid "how do I prounounce your name I dont wanna get it wrong"
If your nickname for Andrew is Skip, then you probably want to stick to Andrew, otherwise the examples given I wouldn't say hurt you.

Interesting answer, can you think of any context specifically? For example, for people n levels above you always use full name? For team members use shorthand?

impersonal relationships such as vendors or whatnot
that's when I use full name
coworkers, bosses, networking, etc - all shorthand
