What do you think is better for your career: full name for professionalism or shorthand name for relationship building e.g Dave rather than David, Steve rather than Steven, Raj rather than Rajesh, American nickname over native born name

depends on the context but I almost always go by my nickname/shorthand name

I don't know if that really makes a difference for career. I wouldn't say the difference between a Dave and David or Bill and William or even Raj and Rajeesh hurt your sense of professionalism. Personally, I use an English nickname to avoid "how do I prounounce your name I dont wanna get it wrong" If your nickname for Andrew is Skip, then you probably want to stick to Andrew, otherwise the examples given I wouldn't say hurt you.

Interesting answer, can you think of any context specifically? For example, for people n levels above you always use full name? For team members use shorthand?

impersonal relationships such as vendors or whatnot that's when I use full name coworkers, bosses, networking, etc - all shorthand
