Why is men's fashion often associated with traditional clothes?
A lot of the fashion items considered to be legit here would be considered kind of weird or antiquated by 90% of people not into that specific brand or niche. Like wax jackets, goodyear welted boots, etc.. Why do you think so much of men's fashion, or the online conversations about it, revolves around older styles of traditional clothing?

It's also interesitng to me so many movie stars are seen wearing thing like wax jackets in films, eg pedro pascal in last of us.
We have a cultural image of a rugged outdoorsy man in a wax jacket, but most people probably don't know what a wax jacket is, or at least I didn't
I think this is just projecting a subset of mens fashion onto mens fashion as a whole
But they probably recognize a wax jacket as that one type of jacket they see sometimes they just don’t know it has a name
yeah
you might be right
Costume design in films isn't to be fashionable, its to express aspects of characterization generally
a wax jacket has an origin in hunting and outdoorsman
yeah, i guess, it's interesting to me the idea of the thing has outlasted the popular usage of it
I've actually seen old school full length oilskins out in the wild (in the bush).
Which is a cousin of wax jackets.
hell yeah
The hunting and shooting posh crowd in the UK still use Barbour waxed jackets for the intended pirpose
once you remove some of the item-specific hobbyists i imagine part of the appeal comes from the fact that these are generally well-made items that would last the test of time (in theory)
especially with the rise of min/max culture in menswear (finding the "correct" t-shirt, jeans, etc so that you won't spend as much time or money or effort) something durable physically will be more appealling
that happens with lots of things though; doc martens were a workers shoe in the 50s mainly before people in the counterculture wore them often enough to form that association and that has endured, to give one example
I mean I've been upland hunting in waxed cotton my entire life. I know lots of people that do. It's the one thing that'll keep you pretty dry (with maintenance) while being able to get beat to hell (which it will)
Not to say that it's like by far the most popular thing out there but it's a pretty good amount of people that use it, interestingly.
