Some More Ally Z1 Woes - SD Cards Not Working
Hello again. Continuing my journey with the ROG Ally Z1, I’m noticing issues with using the SD card slot. It recognizes the card, but the second I try to write to it (install Steam games, etc) it corrupts the card. Cards work on other devices. I thought it was a hardware error but another user in the RH Discord is reporting similar issues with his Legion Go. I wanted to post here in case there might be a software fix. I can reinstall the windows drive and check the SD card reader there if need be. Thanks!

Rh discord?
Retro Handhelds Discord sorry lol.
He’s in here too. @wonkysharks
You'll have to be more specific
On the SD card issue? Sure. I can plug the SD card into the SD card reader. It’s recognized but says it needs to be formatted. Formatting fails. I can format on the steam deck just fine then it’s recognized. Go to install a Steam game and it gets a disk write error and the SD card will no longer mount.
try it on desktiop
It did this on a 1TB and a 512. Same issue.
legion go has never had a similar issue
Desktop says “cannot mount this drive”
format it on desktop
Ok I’ll try it.
I'm in KDE Partition Manager now. It's taking awhile. "Scanning Device"
Had to connect it with a USB SD card reader to even get that far.
Let me try to format on the deck agaion
usb card reader?
maybbe theres some merit then
however thats where my expertise ends
That's fine. This 1TB has definitely been corrupted. I'm going to try to save the 512.
Yeah I don't think this is a Bazzite issue. Both SD cards have been corrupted beyond repair. I run Bazzite on the Ayn Loki and don't have these issues at all. I'm thinking this is a bad SD Card reader.
recreate the partition table
and then btrfs
but yep
GPT Partition Table?
yes
Ok this has to be the reader.
That was on an untouched 64GB
error?
can you expand
Yeah sorry.
sounds like its on its last legs
but good news
asus has fixed it on the refurbs allegedly
So this was a Best Buy open box. I suppose I could return or I can just not use the SD Card reader.
But glad to know it's not me going crazy or a Bazzite issue.
the only way to know 100% is to use win
if youre in the DOA period returning is instant
I could put the original SSD in, try Win, and exchange if it is indeed the SD Card reader.
Which I guess I'll do but sad panda.
So far so good on the replacement Ally. Seems to be reading/writing to an SD card no problem (took the SD card from my MSI Claw for now). Marking this resolved. Thanks again @antheas for helping me troubleshoot. 🙂
