Brooks Brothers sport coat vs SuitSupply sport coat
Both of these are just about perfect fits.

These both look like orphaned suit jackets due to the black buttons and worsted wool
The 1st one definitely is, you can see the tag for a pants size in the 2nd photo
Oh yeah you’re right
Blazers can also use worsted wool though, right?
Blazers (not talking about sport coats) are usually worsted wool yeah but they have metal buttons
Ok yes that's what I thought just double checking ha
how do you spot worsted wool
it looks smooth and shiny compared to make casual fabrics like tweed and hopsack
ohhh
also, most of the time when fabric labels have Super numbers (like Super 110s in the suitsupply suit) it means it's worsted wool
gotcha

Suitsupply Vitale Barberis Wool Navy Blue Striped Dual Vent Blazer ...
Color/Pattern: Navy Blue, Striped. Model: 2-Button Front closure, Double rear vent. Lining: fully-lined, Navy Blue satin. Fabric content: 100% Wool. Sizes can vary depending on the style of the item, the manufacturer and the way the designer intended the item to fit.
yeah, you can see how shiny it is
and also there's the Super 110s label
ok yeah I definitely see that now yeah
sorry if youve said it before but why are you looking for a navy blazer specifically?
is it more for typical dressing up for business casual or slightly dressy occasions, or are you specifically interested in ivy/prep/trad casual styles?
Business casual which is why I’m trying to avoid the gold buttons
if gold buttons are too preppy for you then I'd suggest three options
1 - look for contrast buttons that aren't gold, like horn or enamel, they sometimes come in light brown or cream colors
2 - look for a non worsted wool material like hopsack or tweed
3 - look for a sport coat rather than a navy blazer, it's probably easier to find a casual jacket in gray or brown
For the horn buttons would you suggest to avoid the darker brown ones
I’ve seen dark brown horn on a few jackets that look like orphaned suit jackets, they almost appear black
if they don't contrast then they'll look like suit jacket buttons yeah
oh I guess there's another option which is to buy a jacket with black or dark brown buttons and do a button swap at your local tailor
yeah I wouldn’t be totally opposed to that option
If the jacket doesn’t have very structured shoulders then there shouldn’t be much of a difference right
and this would be considered an orphaned suit jacket too right
yes, worsted wool and non contrast buttons generally means orphaned suit jacket
honestly structured shoulders doesn't mean much for suit vs blazer because depending on the decade and the maker, either suits or blazers could have either soft shoulders or padded structured ones
ah ok
like Brooks Brothers makes soft shoulder blazers and suits
