Bazzite-Deck on Steam Deck all Steam games won't launch.
First off, I apologize if this is the wrong place to ask for help. I looked elsewhere and couldn't find anything useful to my situation.
After switching from Steam OS to Bazzite-Deck (KDE) on my steam deck all my steam games won't launch accept for non-steam games. Non-steam games launch fine through steam using lutris.
I tried both proton and native steam games through gaming and desktop mode. After clicking the play button it switches from play to cancel to stop and goes back to play. This happens with newly installed games and games I copied from my Steam OS install. I want to try and fix this without reinstalling since I encountered this days after setting it up as my main computer.
Things I tried in no particular order:
Clearing the steam directory (I kept steamapps and part of userdata so I could keep my steamgriddb grids and non-steam game collections.)
Updating the OS and Steam
Rebase-ing the OS
Clearing Steam Download Cache
Adding PROTON_LOG=1 to launch options in proton games (There was no output log.)
Checking if the game's executable runs outside of steam (The games that don't need steam to launch worked.)
Verifying the Integrity of game files
Changing proton versions
Switching between native and windows versions of the games
Reinstalling the games
Seeing what comes up in the terminal when launching steam through it
I haven't tried reinstalling steam since I don't know how to do that on ostree (I'm new to it).

Did you ever happen to have symlinked your compatdata folder to the SD card?
No, I don't have an SD card installed.
Native games also will not start.
PROTON_LOG=1 %command%
As a launch option
It'll make a log in your home dir
Then we can hopefully figure out what broke for you
I'll try again since I didn't have that last part tacked in.
Though that won't fix the native ones.
did you move anything from SteamOS to Bazzite?
No logs in the home folder.
Ok, so it's not even attempting to launch your game then
Close steam, open a terminal, launch steam through it, and try again
Paste what's in the terminal afterward
Yes, steamapps and the parts of userdata that have the custom cover art and non-steam game entries.
you should probably delete those prefixes
will do
back up non-cloud saves
ok
Did you attempt to launch a game?
I don't see that here
Oh sorry
I need the whole log
Right
Sorry it's past midnight for me. Running on fumes.
It's all good
I tried GMod on native linux and it works.
But the proton games still don't.
What's weird is there is no error in your log whatsoever
My guess is the same as term, something that was copied
And it's breaking steam's ability to launch a compatibility tool
Hmmm I think I have an idea of what it is.
one sec
nvm the shortcuts file in steam userdata doesn't include steam game entries.
did you already delete all of your prefixes?
I moved them to another folder.
can you verify that a new one was attempted to be created for BTTF?
I'll check.
It did create a folder for the app id of the game but it is empty.
delete all of your Protons
there are a lot of symlinks in those
pretty much anything subject to a symlink needs to be deleted
alright
while you're at it, all SteamLinuxRuntimes
same reason
Uninstalling from steam spits this error out:
exit out of Steam entirely
ok and i'll delete manually
yep
Solution
delete all of
Proton*
and SteamLinuxRuntime*
also delete these from
steamapps/
these are the manifests for various Protons and runtimes
then let Steam redownload them on the flyI'm so dumb for not looking back at discord. I just did this manually be looking in each manifest file...
Done
will do now
that works too because I found out what they were by looking at the files manually, but I only have these + 3 installed on my boot drive on my desktop, so I didn't take too long
i had quite a few lol
It's working now! I can't believe I didn't try to do this. I literally had the same problem a few years back on my desktop and did this...
np. the symlinks pretty much caused the problem
btw I have a simple question about the bazzite help section.
your user name is different at the minimum
right
There is a thread on here with a persisting problem i have that was solved for the OP but doesn't work for me. Do I post in the same thread or create a new post for help?
create a new one and link to the old one as a reference
ok thanks! And thanks again for help.
