iirc the unrated games you played affect the mmr of the first game you get into so it may be that your mmr was just so bad in normals that your starting rank was too low to let you calibrate all the way up to ascendant in one go
if you queued with other people that can definitely also lower your mmr gains
i think the rank of the pepole in the lobby also matter
it shouldn't matter too much though, if you are actually playing to the level of an ascendant then you will get double rankups and the such to get back up faster
those people only exist depending on your mmr so they aren't relevant to this
i.e he wouldn't get matched with plats if his mmr was ascendant
