Insulated, water repellent jacket recommendations
Similar to the recent question regarding parkas. I’m looking for a jacket, sans hood, slant pockets, that is water repellent and insulated. Based on my research 🧐 I’m thinking 60-100gsm. I recently moved to the PNW and am looking for a good daily driver that can go with most outfits, be warm enough over just a t-shirt in about 30-45°F temps and actively repel/resist rain. I know most quilted jackets have some manner of DWR coating, but I’m after something where the water beads up more given the nature of the weather here.
Budget is around $450 or less (unless it’s way baller, then I will splurge 👏). Generally the price goes up with the quality/performance of the insulation, I’m cool with it. I’m 6’2”, about 180lb. Generally a medium for more modern/slim fits. Can’t say I’ve ever measured my outerwear jackets but I’m a 40R in blazers.
I had originally ordered this https://bonobos.com/products/the-harrington-jacket?color=jet%20black G9 clone from Bonobos but it is crazy boxy and unflattering AF so I’m returning it. Not really a big fan of the collar either. This Skyliner from Huckberry X Eddie Baur might be an option but I was a little concerned about the lining clashing. https://huckberry.com/store/eddie-bauer/category/p/76023-huckberry-x-eddie-bauer-skyliner-jacket I generally wear a lot of pastels. I really like the look of the Mission Workshop Eiger https://missionworkshop.com/products/eiger-waterproof-field-jacket?variant=31820304580717 but other than it saying “it adapts to temperatures” I have no idea on actual performance. I like that it has side zip pockets because for daily wear I prefer those to drop-in pockets typical of chore jackets. Wish it didn’t have a hood though.
Someone had suggested just getting a shell over an insulated lining, which has validity, but not what I’m looking for. Anyhoo, thanks in advance ❤️🔥

I think most of the people here who live in the PNW would suggest that your daily driver rain jacket has a hood
Yeah. Without a hood just get a Nano Puff and have done with it.
Well that’s all fine and good, but I want some retail therapy and to buy a sexy new jacket 😂
What about waxed jackets? I know of them, but I’ve never worn one before.
Not sure what to look for or if that might be an option here
they make hooded nano
That's true. It's not very waterproof though
yeah :( a lot of stuff isn’t really great anymore since the material we used to use to make it is super toxic
you can do a lotttt of research into the fact goretex isnt even the same material it used to be, and is pretty much like every other fabric now
at this point you need to regularly spray your stuff with DWR (durable water repellent) to achieve the same effect
i have a patagonia down jacket (favorite jacket of all time) and it comes preapplied, but i just try to reapply it somewhat infrequently
you can buy spray bottles of the stuff on amazon for like $15
tldr: water repellency isnt what it used to be, because toxic- basically any jacket you buy will have the same level of repellency after a month or so of use unless you reapply DWR
Something like this? https://a.co/d/aI3WltR FWIW, I do already own a Patagonia Nano Puff (no hood). But when it’s actually raining, the jacket itself gets soaked. Yes, I stay dry but I can’t just shake it off or anything. Btw, I’m originally from a much cooler climate than the PNW. I have a lot of warm jackets but they’re great for snow, not for rain.
Gear AID Revivex Durable Water Repellent (DWR) Spray for Waterproof...
Specifically engineered for soft shell garments. ReviveX water repellents will totally restore and/or create DWR (Durable Water Repellency) to any outerwear that can be washed and tumble dried.
I personally don't see much use for insulated rain jackets. I just wear a waterproof shell and layer.
I had one from North Face but rarely wore it.
I think they are relatively unusual. For example, Columbia makes a lot of jackets, but this seems like the only one that fits the bill: https://www.columbia.com/p/mens-landroamer-lined-jacket-2051061.html?dwvar_2051061_color=257
Yup exactly
It’s the unfortunate reality of waterproofing jackets now
Grangers and Nikwax are the go to- and not particularly expensive
I don't see anything at Patagonia. Plenty of raincoats, but none with lightweight insulation.
What do you mean? Almost all of their jacks are in an insulated section
just spray it with dwr and keep the nano puff
He wants an insulated raincoat, not an insulated jacket that's water-resistant.
again, these are the same thing bro
we don’t make waterproof coats anymore,,,, even goretex is sprayed with DWR
look at any raincoat, like at all
and they are all sprayed with DWR, that is what makes them waterproof
Waterproof/breathable rainwear is constructed using a membrane or coating that serves as a barrier that rain cannot penetrate. The outer surface of most rainwear (known as the face fabric) is also treated with a durable water repellent (DWR) finish that keeps raindrops from soaking that surface and compromising the breathability of the underlying membrane or coating.
copy pasted
once that dwr wears off, or you can accidentally wash it out, rainjackets will ultimately soak through even if you don’t get wet
I disagree. My patagonia torrentshell has vastly more protection from a downpour than a nano-puff ever will.
It's a raincoat, designed to keep you dry. A nano-puff is not.
Waterproof/breathable H2No® Performance Standard 3-layer shell provides the highest levels of comfort, performance and long-term waterproof durability; the fabrics, membrane and durable water repellent (DWR) finish are made without perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs/PFAS)
🤣
literally same finish and build as the nano puff
Lightweight 100% recycled polyester ripstop shell with a durable water repellent (DWR) finish made without perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs/PFAS)
💀
like i’m not hating but basically every piece of raingear now a says is just DWR coated
“100% recycled nylon ripstop face, a polycarbonate PU membrane with 13% biobased content, a tricot backer and a DWR finish”
like
they are both made from
nylon ripstop
my b polyester or nylon
So, I actually own a Torrentshell, and my wife owns a nano-puff. I am extremely confident that the Torrentshell will keep you much more dry than the nano puff will.
with a DWR finish
did u read any of what i said
about reapplying DWR
liek
i literally can’t explain the same thing over and over
eventually the torrentshell will be the same, just apply DWR and it will be like brand new
i ski in a patagonia down jacket, or a nano and have worn it in torrential downpour without getting wet…
i also have a torrentshell, powder day from pat
and they are the same water resistance
i have the arcteryx beta lv, and their down jacket i forgot the name of
they’re literally all the exact same i promise you
DWR washes out, wears out, runs off, etc over time
The torrentshell has a waterproof membrane that is where the real protection comes from. The DWR is just a surface treatment that, as you said, wears off and has to be reapplied.
idek how you can even be convinced of this when they are made from the same fabric and on patagonias site both say coated with a DWR finish
yeah most of pattys jackets are membrane
Not the nano puff. Not my jackson glacier puffer.
the nano puff is a laminate jacket bro…
like it is laminate nylon
which is exactly how a membrane works
like membranes are not impermeable, in any fashion
that is how jackets are breathable
the dwr is what is there for water resistance
torentshell with dwr that hasnt been reapplied:
.
pretty easy to soak the fabric
Good discussion in here. Even if sticking with a typical nylon + DWR, any suggestions for more clean lines or traditional jacket styles? Here’s another one I found at Buck Mason: https://www.buckmason.com/products/ranger-green-shell-cloth-insulated-explorer-jacket?variant=41007707160659

Ranger Green Shell Cloth Insulated Explorer Jacket - Classic fit insulated chore jacket cut from ultralight weather-resistant nylon with PrimaLoft fill.
It’s a chore jacket though and I don’t like the drop in pockets
technical is honestly where i buy outdoor gear, so i can’t help much with avoiding that look
😢

Probably the classic option would be a waxed cotton Barbour jacket, which are not cheap, but are within your budget. Not something I know much about, but something like this: https://www.barbour.com/us/barbour-ashby-wax-jacket-olive
Ashby Waxed Jacket
The Ashby is a stylish, practical all seasons jacket. Constructed in Barbour's signature 6oz Sylkoil waxed cotton, with a matte finish and a comfortable, lived-in feel. Slightly more tailored than the Bedale, yet still allowing room for essential winter layering, classic features include a 'Stormfly' front with hardy stud fastenings, a smart sit...
🤌
I’ll take a peek at their offerings. Any other suggestions on similar brands?
I'm not the person to ask
Well as a bit of an update, I found this one: https://huckberry.com/store/flint-and-tinder/category/p/83226-waxed-mill-jacket which is pretty much what I was after…. So of course it’s out of stock in my size
But I did order one of these: https://huckberry.com/store/flint-and-tinder/category/p/66590-quilted-waxed-shirt-jacket
