If a place I'm interviewing with says I need secret clearance... and I fudged if my only other J is C2C?

Can you specify? Did you alter dates or something on your resume for that job?
I would suspect, you could play the "oh I made a mistake on my resume" game but you would have to be completely honest for the clearance investigation. It's better to avoid though.

My current C2C job is the only thing that overlapped
Same here. I did one government contract once, and a few months in they asked me to get a Secret Clearance. I refused. They didn't ask again.

They said some of their projects require it and I would not need to get clearance unless I happen to be on those projects... but they asked ahead of time if I was willing to get the clearance if they needed me to.
You can always say sure, and then a year down the line if it happens, change your mind 😛
