how are you flashing the ISO to your drive?
By usb
what software made the USB, I mean
what software did you flash it with
and also, is your device in legacy bios mode?
Rufus
Ask Ubuntu
"452: out of range pointer" during installation - Why? And how to f...
I'm trying to install Ubuntu 23.04 on a newly-assembled home server (just a mini-PC with 32GB of RAM), but whatever entry I select (install, safe graphics, test memory) I get the "out of range
make sure you aren't using this version of Rufus
and make sure you aren't using legacy bios mode
Yes
yeah, for sure fix that
UEFI is a hard requirement
and even if it wasn't, legacy mode is terrible for gaming performance
Back to windows I go
?
To change change to uefi
you'd do that through your bios, not through windows
Oh
How can I do that?
in your BIOS settings
I’ve checked everywhere on my bios I can’t find anything like that
I’ve checked google
And YouTube
Nothing
idk what happened or going on but what desktop environment are you using
kde or gnome?
Kde
flash this
then:
wait, what GPU brand and do you want game mode?
because you can install stock kinoite then rebase to bazzite
in case our ISOs are messing with something although i don't think it's that, but it can confirm if you did something wrong flashing it
actually ignore all of this. maybe you should reflash the bazzite ISO with fedora media writer or balena etcher as opposed to rufus
but do this as a last resort^
Nivida
ok if you do the fedora kinoite method
after installing kinoite and reach the desktop, open Konsole and enter:
and wait for it to rebase (takes a while and there's no indicator but the terminal will output to reboot your system when it's done)
Sorry but this is my first Linux thing
ok then just try reflashing the ISO again with Fedora Media Writer im not sure whats going on. if kyle's suspicion is right about legacy BIOS, and your system doesn't support UEFI (which usually means it has to be ancient) then you can't use bazzite on it
Yeah I think it might be I have an old system
From 2012 to be specific
is the nvidia GPU from that time too?
like the whole system is from 2012
UEFI has existed for years before 2012 so it's not that
No it’s a 1030
oh ok
Yup
I’m still looking for for the UEFI thing
I check all the options on bios
it most likely is UEFI
if it's from 2012
Yes
so it's something else
Could be Rufus
yeah use fedora media writer
Back to windows I go
GitHub
Release 5.0.9 · FedoraQt/MediaWriter
Changes:
Windows: uninstall previous version when installing to the same directory (#662 #671)
windows executable is here
there is also this alternative
balenaEtcher - Flash OS images to SD cards & USB drives
A cross-platform tool to flash OS images onto SD cards and USB drives safely and easily. Free and open source for makers around the world.
I have concerns that the Nvidia image is going to work on this one:
machine is over 10 years old. Does it have an SSD?
good catch, this is unsupported by Nvidia
completely dropped all support for it
Also if this machine has an i3, it is going to be VERY slow to configure kmods on boot.
It’s an i7
You'll be limited to your intel igpu
zero support for the GPU you have
I don't think it's worth continuing
So it’s going to bottle neck
right, the nvidia drivers we ship in Bazzite don't support the nvidia card that comes with these machines.
due to it being over 10 years old.
Magical
So what other os you recommend?
I think Windows is your best bet until you upgrade your hardware to be quite honest
Nvidia dropped all support for your card under Linux
and Linux gaming really requires a vulkan capable GPU in the first place
Even Windows doesn't really support this hardware that well. I looked at their drivers page and the newest drivers it has directly from Dell are drivers for Windows 8.1.
Fun
Well thank you guys for the help
no worries! There are plenty of options for you to upgrade to where you will have a much better time. If you are trying to do an HTPC with bazzite on it, there are a lot of reasonable options out there.
Yeah well for now I’m just going to keep windows
When I get a new system I’m going to run it
Bye bye
