Bazzite-stable & bazzite-nvidia installs can't get past "Updating kargs"
I have spent most of my weekend testing different bios presets and different ISOs and different usb sticks, nothing gets me past this screen in the boot process.
I am running a gaming laptop with an intel i7 10th gen, integrated graphics, an rtx 2060 mobile, 16gb of ram, and a 1tb ssd.
More help would be appreciated, pls ask for any other details that would be useful.

this user had this issue today too, but they left after a while :/
they also mentioned:

you both seem to own dell machines but that shouldn't really matter 🤔
i looked into your hardware by the pic of the laptop you sent (Dell G15 i think)
it should work. i dont understand why building kargs is giving so many issues
secure boot should work as intended but try disabling it and see what happens if you didnt already
You got the model right, I think it’s a Dell G3 15 3500, I’ll test it again soon without secure boot off and get back to you
I checked, and it turns out I already had secure boot off
when the prompt came up, did you enroll MOK
instead of continue boot

did this come up?
since it was turned off
could be completely off, but im trying anything with this issue you two experienced
like maybe enrolling the key with secure boot turned off messed something up?
but if you didn't run into this screen then it wouldn't matter
I remember seeing it when I tried this with secure boot on previously, but it was correctly not appearing with secure boot off
oh ok then. i still don't understand what is going on at all. i even tested a fresh installation of bazzite yesterday and it got past kargs
Is there anything else I should try to turning off before doing another test install, like TPM or something else? I’ve been doing most of these tests on a freshly reset bios which seems to have secure boot off, but TPM on.
TPM used to be an issue with the old ISOs, but that shouldn't affect any of this 🤔
you can try for trial and error reasons i guess
ok. If I were to test another distro for comparison, I would default to kde neon, since it would let me try plasma 6, but do you have another recommendation I should try before that? Also that test might not matter if I am correct in thinking that bazzite is kinda unique for having this updating kargs screen
yeah this is true
i would try a different linux OS though
to see if it makes it to the desktop, which it probably will
kde neon worked fine, considering we are out of ideas for the moment i will probably wait until next weekend or a night with unexpected free time to do any more experiments
Okay thanks for giving it a try to see what fixes this
getting this same issue on an Acer Nitro 5, bazzite-gnome-nvidia. GTX 1650 Ti
I've seen this, left my laptop on overnight to see if it needed more time but it was still stuck updating kargs. I get that MOK screen but I press continue boot. I have secure boot disabled.
ok so all of you have nvidia in common
that might not mean anything especially if other nvidia users installed bazzite without the never ending kargs
looking for things in common
I'm thinking of trying an older Bazzite ISO, the online only ISO to see if it'll install
let me know if that works, those have other issues too
you can even try stock fedora kinoite/silverblue (kde or gnome) and rebase following current fedora atomic users instructions
although im not sure if it's the ISO
but if this does work, it can narrow it down to it
good luck 🫡 i hope it works
So at the MOK screen, if I have secure boot disabled, I choose continue boot?
yes
It's working, but I had 4 Fedora Linux options in grub, chose the first one and I'm in
It actually didn't hang on updating kargs
upstream issue
this is using the old online ISO?
yes
All right, finally making some headway here
Looks to be an issue with Nvidia 550
Be sure to send your thanks to novideo while I look for a workaround
@EyeCantCU if you have time any point this week would really appreciate an extra pair of eyes here
For everyone else, if you can get to a TTY and run dmesg that'd be very helpful
I'll have a look. Away from home atm and don't have anything offhand to debug but I'll see if I can't get ahold of something to figure it out
Hi all. Freshly installed then updated Bazzite on a Dell XPS 17 with an i7 10750H and GTX 1650 Ti. I can't replicate this. Is it still an issue for you all?
Ooh, you think it’s fixed? I got a working arch setup right now but if you think I have a decent chance of successful installation, I’ll give it a shot
Well, hoping you’re right, cause I just finished installing it, and it’s now updating initrfs. I’ll get back to you later with how it goes.
Unfortunately I've heard this still persists. Going to look over the hardware setup script and see where things fall apart
I seem to be stuck on “updating kargs” again, so I would really appreciate that!
2 GPUs?
Oh nvm
Yea this issue is really weird, and like 4 users experienced this
All on nvidia
Yet not everyone has this issue
Yes, I’ve got an Intel iGPU and a Nvidia dGPU
Is there any chance this will get fixed today? Or should I just switch to another distro while I wait?
idk you may want to switch to have a working pc. from what ive seen it's an issue with nvidia+hybrid graphic setups and it seemed to occur after the nvidia stable driver update
lol getting a dual GPU laptop will forever be my worst purchase decision, it never stops being a deeply mid experience.
it's worse on Linux in general
i have AMD hybrid graphics on my desktop and still run into issues from time to time
theres been discussion on how to fix this but they're very awful solutions. Eyecantseeu is looking over code rn but ik he's busy with his new job
nvidia+hybrid gpu is a double whammy but it's even worse that it breaks during building kernel arguments
Makes sense. Ping me if you’d like me to test an iso, if some sort of fix is found.
Solution
Do you have a monitor that you can connect to your laptop?
somehow this worked for this user who has a nvidia hybrid laptop who experienced the same thing
Not seeing anything immediately obvious but I'm going to keep digging
im speculating it's the new nvidia drivers + hybrid graphic setups that do not like building kargs for some reason
would be an awful workaround to downgrade the drivers though
Not even an option anymore, they aren't on Rpmfusion
well it's not worth doing that anyways
Agreed. Every Nvidia driver release there's a new major issue. Last release it was display flickering
the world if nvidia had open source drivers like amd and intel
also wouldn't have people out there reverse engineering their drivers because there would be no need for that!
It's unfortunate things are the way they are because for some people it's the only option. Lucky it isn't for me
i know 😔 it shouldn't be like this at all. i wouldn't care at all if nvidia didn't have so many issues on linux, especially when it mostly comes down to closed source drivers 😭
Anyways I doubt it's the kargs or the initramfs
Those are just two rpm-ostree commands that simply take a long time due to making a new deployment
It's likely Nvidia drivers shutting the bed after being loaded
We could try always restarting at the end of our hardware script on Nvidia builds
Plugged into a tv with the HDMI port linked up to the Nvidia card, I’ll get back to yall with results soon
Lmao no fucking way
It’s working wtf
LETS GO!!! so at least there's a workaround
nobody understands it either here
Jesus Christ that was so fast
it's nvidia bullshit
To think I spent multiple weekends waiting for it to do something, when the graphics card wasn’t even running
We love it
Glad it is working, thanks for the help lol
We live for shit just breaking out under our feet
That we can never know about cuz it's all closed source
Just the best
Did you know Nvidia wants to make a handheld now?
did you have to plug a monitor into your laptop to get this to work btw?
same
AMD iGPU, Nvidia dGPU
no this is the built in monitor
oh wow
2 other users who had this had to plug a monitor into the laptop to get past the 'building kargs' for an eternity
thanks for answering
Building kargs is for sure a red herring
It's done, but it stops rendering for some reason
And merely looks paused there
oh
it's almost like the driver doesn't load after it's done
wtf
or it doesn't display anything
i dont understand this shit. nvidia is a black box
After an install using the offline ISO, I manually restart it with the power button, it acts like updating initramfs/kargs never happened, still pauses on kargs with the spinning wheel
wait so does this happen on every boot?
for me, yeah
but the online only ISOs don't have this issue
I never tried using an extra monitor because I found on any other distros, multi monitor caused some issues
this even more bizzare now. i suggested someone try the old online ISO with similar hybrid nvidia laptop hardware and it didnt work for them
the monitor trick worked though
I still feel like Valve is largely the only one delivering on something that's genuinely fine tuned and polished. Too bad NVIDIA they can't do anything with Tegra cause Nintendo - could have had a competent ARM handheld
Hard to know if it’s related to all this nonsense, but I can’t get X11 to boot at all. After putting in my password, I just get stuck here. Once Mesa 24.1 comes out, I literally don’t care how bad the performance is, I’m just gonna have to switch to open source NVK drivers.
