The concept of the 'natural waist'
I'm quite perplexed by the natural waist. Some says it's where your navel is, some says it's the thinnest part of your middle body.
For example, the size guide on Natalino's site says: 'Our trouser is intended to be worn at the natural waist so please measure firmly around the navel. '
My waist size is 32" around my navel. That's not the thinnest part of my waist, though. 1.5" above my waist is only 31", but that's very high up on my body.
I need a 12.5" rise for the trousers to reach the 32" inch (navel) area on my waist. I'd need at least a 14" rise for them to reach the 31" area.
And I see trousers with a 9.25" rise (from The Armoury, e.g.) advertised as high rise.
WTF is going on? Is my body weird or do I not understand something?

9.25” is def not high rise
I consider 12” and higher high rise for a 36” waist
It's where your navel is. The "thinnest part of your middle body" is to help ppl distinguish from their hips, but if that doesn't represent your body I wouldn't worry about it.
I have the same issue. I struggle to wear high rise pants sometimes because my body tapers down to right above my hips, so pants often slide down.
the armoury should know better than to list 9.25" as high rise
I wanted to add a drawing to illustrate, because I’m not sure you mean the same thing, Jibba?
I agree, that's why I was surprised (this pair, for example: https://www.thearmoury.com/collections/trousers/first-class-high-twist-wool-model-a-trousers?variant=40266377625671)
They don’t include the waistband as part of the measurement
The Armoury, you mean?
Waistband is about 1.5”?
My ring jacket trousers with the model 1 suit are definitely high enough rise
Would probably estimate around 11-12ish
With above info on my measurements, could y'all help me choose the correct size from this table? It's for Natalino's tropical wool trousers. I'm leaning 34 and having the waist taken in (although I never had a pair of pants larger than size 32)
i'm guessing the measurements on the size chart are the flat measurement, meaning that you'll have to double everything except the rise and inseam
correct. I'm slightly above the waist size of the size 32 pair at the specified rise, hence my doubts
that said it looks like the "rise" for natalino's tropical wool does include the waistband which may not be high enough to accommodate it; i'd go 34 and tailor it down
