What colors go good with this type of gray?
Hey there! I've created this nice landing-page for my portfolio and borrowed this background theme but I'm having a hard time matching the rest of my sections on the page with this gray what would you guys recommend?

OK
specifically
what section are you trying to colour?
and a really good website for when you are stuck on colour themes
They're two different sections one's for an About Me and the other is to display projects

😮
I use it often!
Definitely giving this a try!
You can plug your current tones in, lock them, and then generate complimentry colours
also share the other sections if you can
(hint, the URL itself contains the colour codes, so its not too hard to quickly open up a page with your current colours)
I think the complicated part about having sites with a lot of colors is being comfortable with having sections with no colors beyond greyscale
What I most often do, is have very plain sections
with splashes of colour
yep same
i try to reserve those colors for important actions or to draw someone's eyes to that section
otherwise, literally black white and an off-white
I prefer greys in the 111 to 222 range generally
and not quite white/black text
I might use pure white, if I have grey and say red accents
For the other sections I'll with a much lighter tone of grey I don't want the user to have their eyes focused on a nice dark gray to scroll down and get flash banged with pure white
(think assassins creed sorta colours)
Love those games
Oh, I only use the white it its the main colour
same
and 100% never mixed with dark
if i'm going to change colors in the middle then i'd either be very careful with the transition or keep it all 1 color and only have colorful sections at the top/bottom of the page
Currently I have the two sections in the grey color family it'll just be a little lighter
I like to use
transitions
where I can with colours
so it fades in as you scrollfor example this is the second section it's not white but isn't crazy dark (still got some touching up to do
thats what I like about #F5F5F5. its white but not
(being serious)
I'm still trying to understand and get used to all this I don't have the best eye for design
And then the third section is just a little bit more darker
One trick to try
is instead of adding the accent colours to the elements directly
is to include shapes
that are filled
Can you elaborate on that?
Im kinda confused on what you mean
the disabled "back" button is that F5F5F5 color. its subtle but works great as a near-white color
Lemme try and find an example
It looks great
Not dark but not light
Nope and also works good with black text
very true
Hmmm, can't find a good example, lemme just write one
an offwhite color in general is also a safe transition if you're wanting to break up the white backgrounds
Personally I appreciate off-white colors purley because they aren't pure white so you wont be flash banged and they arent dark to a point where you cant appreciate the color.
sometimes the flashbang is a nice easter egg though 😉
Yea, When you end up flash banging your employer the easter egg is the quick ticket to not being hired
i could actually probably get it added to my company's platforms
Go for it
we do have an "easter egg" where all the pages are white but sometimes a popup appears that is a bright orange background reminding you that there are items in your cart
Trolling your users is crazy
thankfully they stay around
😆
lol it is actually an accessibility violation that we're gonna delete soon if not already
how's that a violation?
it was the combo of colors - orange and white, that made it a violation
its actually already gone, i thought the team was still working on fixing it 😄
If you don't mind me asking, what company do you work for?
nike
damn
Honestly, I've been meeting a good amount of people now who work in big comapnys and it's crazy. I was trying to network and just learn more and one of my teachers I'm cool with has a friend who's a programming manager at Microsoft I got to talk with him and just learn more about the industry.
oh nice. networking is always a good idea
100% I finish Highschool soon (literally a few months im so thankful) so I thought I might as well start getting connections now
Even though I'm currently on the Web-Dev side of things I plan on switching to Software Engineering once I do get into College but I'll definetly start learning a decent amount about software engineering
i think the nice thing about software engineering is that for some people its just a title. like a web dev generally does the same thing as a software eng
In what way would they be the same?
in the sense that they both include programming, setting up infrastructure for the websites/applications, ensuring a good delivery from local development to your production environment, etc.
Oh I getchu! makes sense
yep
i went from having a title of "web developer" to "software engineer" and didn't require anything other than just what the title name was
Hey since you're already experienced lol do you have any tips/tricks regarding coding and getting a job/internship? I have an opportunity to head to Snapchats HQ next month for a good old school fieldtrip that's the main reason why Im even creating a portfolio I wanna present myself and show them what I can do and attempt to be on their radar of some sort. I know it's a long shot but one can hope.
not for Nike specifically (we're totally frozen with hiring) but honestly the biggest thing is to not stress over whatever you do. The more natural it feels the better your delivery would be
I understand what you're saying, Right now I'm 17 (turn 18 in a few months) and my main goal is to have some sort of job in software engineer by the time I'm around 23 I know it might be young but I wanna grind for it
never a bad thing to grind for what you want in life 🙂
Yes sir!
i've been in engineering/dev since 22yo
Im thankful coding is a passion of mine which will make it more enjoyable for me
in terms of an actual career
yup
i've been programming for a very long time though. definitely would recommend trusting your gut though. sometimes "projects with friends" can turn into something real
I overall enjoy coding and seeing my work come to life so getting to do that while working with a company would be insane
if i would've trusted my gut, i'd have a very cushioned life right now
What projects did you have the chance to get into?
i worked on this small project called ChatStats which people know as one of the most popular streamer platforms called StreamElements
just a small group of friends doing some data work and then it turned into one of the top platforms
Hm I myself haven't heard of it, to be fair im not really that into watching streams
its a 100mil company
Just checked it out and did some small research
supposedly it's valued at 400-500 Million
back in 2021
yeah the one i looked at is quite old
Well, I assume if they're still your friends there's no shot they would deny you a spot in the company
you did do some work on it when it was smaller
I have totally forgotten how to implment this effect
I know I did it with blend modes etc
but I cant remember exactly how
Your colors are too bright for dark mode. Try reading about dark mode and colors. The buttons have a white shadown on dark mode which does not look good.
