cleaning wool coats

Hi all. Have this new to me overcoat and wonder if anyone has tried handwashing rather than dry cleaning something similar? Any success/horror stories? There's no interfacing or structure as such, just the wool shell and a lining. Should I just suck up the cost of dry cleaners

Do you have enough space to dry it, either hang dry or laid flat? I don't think coats like this need to be cleaned very often. If it doesn't smell, have moth holes, any stains, etc. you could skip cleaning it entirely

@raisins no peanuts there's some staining around the collar, so it'll have to be cleaned in some way

@raisins no peanuts ha yeah. It's the space to leave it dry would be a challenge maybe, hadn't really thought that through

Yeah I hand washed my thrifted overcoat when I first got it and it was just like handwashing a wool sweater, but obviously required a bigger wash bin, more space to lay out, more time to dry, etc. Certain spots like collar and pocket flaps needed an iron afterwards to restore their shape. The wash water was absolutely filthy so it was definitely worth it

Just dropped it into a dry cleaners. Space to leave it out drying, as it's absolutely massive and there's two young kids in the apartment, would have been tough. Also not as expensive as thought might have been

You can try spot cleaning the stains
