One of the classics is the metalhead way. Denim vest covered in band patches. Worn over a tee, flannel shirt or a leather jacket.
That's a very specific look though and depends if that's something you are into or not
alternatively if you look at outfits of people wearing something like a carharrt/dickies vest you could swap that for a denim vest

Seconding Soup's recs, here's some ancient sal fits for reference. It's the same way i'd style a denim jacket, over a flannel or crewneck with some olive green bottoms and brown leather shoes.
