Audio randomly cutting out
Using an AMD 6700xt over hdmi with latest bazzite deck build for HTPC, audio seems to randomly cut in and out for a few seconds at random intervals. No idea what causes it or why, I see various posts about the issue online but no obvious solution, tried dp to hdmi adapter, disabling rebar, but the issue keeps creeping back up. Some games appear to be more affected than others, and some the issue doesn't appear at all. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

in games?
In games yes. I cannot confirm all games as I said it's random. But it seems some titles are far more affected than others
try adding
PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=50 %command%
and increase the number as needed

I just recently did this for SF6I will try it when I get the chance. I was playing around with chimeraos and the issue was far far more severe there, I had read it was an arch issue. Only to find it still happening on bazzite, albeit far less but still random. Wish I knew the cause of it
It was happening a lot for me specifically in tekken 8 and dark souls 1 remaster
Do you happen to know if this is just an AMD gpu issue? I never had any issues like this with an intel gpu
all signs point to a pipewire issue
Interesting, well hopefully a fix is to come. Gonna hate having to add a parameter for each game and "hope" that it's fixed
It still seems to be happening with the launch command added and increasing the delay
Read a post about in bios changing the pcie gen version from auto to either gen 3 or 4 helped. I dont see how that makes a different but I did it and so far im not noticing the issue? Hate it cause its so hard to replicate with its randomness
Pcie4 has way stricter signal requirements
Well the mobo I'm using doesn't have gen 4, so I switched from auto to gen 3 strictly. The post I read was just referring to turn off auto in favor of exclusively gen 3 or 4
Ok that is weirder
I also read switching to x11 from Wayland might help which I'm also trying. I can easily find numerous reports of this issue, but no solid answer
I was about to say, it was looking promising but nope just cut out again on me
Do you think using gen 4 with a 6700xt is required? Or is there a bug somewhere that just needs fixed
nope its not required, if anything its either something with the scheduler or pipewire, kyle might know more than me since he has done most of the stuff in bazzite
Hopefully can get his attention to at least point me in the right direction. I also saw a post about potentially using corectrl to raise the minimum clock frequency of the gpu and that supposedly also helps? Suppose can try that in the meantime
well heis most likely asleep now since he is in the US
Well I mean in general, until he notices this post can try some of the other random suggestions I'm finding online
Here is a link to the full system build, as to not rule out any components being the culprit https://pcpartpicker.com/list/6WYbrv

If we can't figure it out I may wind up ordering a different gpu. I'm still within my return window on this 6700xt and see if the problem persists. Then try a higher chipset mobo, etc
seems to randomly cut in and out for a few seconds at random intervals. How strange it might sound, it might also be caused by the quality of your HDMI cable... Those cables carry digital signals which have a bandwidth, which might be saturated at some peaks... That's why there are different HDMI cables with labels like 4k etc... It's worth to rule-out that possibility...
Using verified hdmi 2.1 cables already, but I appreciate the suggestion
I had these audio dropouts for a while during gaming, what I discovered is there is a system service called 'duperemove' that continues running while gaming when it should probably be stopped, it is meant to compact BTRFS file systems. When I disabled that service, then the audio dropouts stopped
I also was using audio over hdmi on a 6600xt
recent updates should have put a heavy memory & cpu limit on it
if you still get stuttering w/ it enabled do let me know
since which update?
Got a 6750xt in today. Gonna be swapping that out tonight and see if the issue persists. Weird question but does anyone know if a bottlenecking CPU could be causing it by inconsistent frame times maybe?
Rip of course the 6750xt I got is just a couple mm too thick for my case. Gonna have to send it back.
Picked up a 5600x today, issue was persistent. That leaves the mobo and the gpu on the hardware side of things
I have a 5600x and 7900xt with audio passing through via DP. For the handful of games that I get crackling or skipping, the latency env variable was sufficient
Unfortunately the latency variable didn't work for me, no matter what I set the delay to
I'm essentially rebuilding this system from scratch, I ordered a new mobo with a higher chipset, gpu, and pcie gen 4 riser cable as the one that came with my case is gen 3 only. If that doesn't fix it, at least I'll know it's not a hardware issue with 100% confidence
Update, I have swapped all the parts, mobo, gpu, cpu, gen 4 gpu riser. Issue still persists, it's definitely not some kind of hardware issue
Bumping as issue is unresolved. Even if it's not fixable I'd like to diagnose the problem so it can be reported to the correct channels and fixed eventually
Here is a proton log of a game running while the issue is present, if its of any help https://pastebin.com/Y4dHCW6A

Do you have any other launch options?
None minus the proton logger
I'd be happy to provide any other logs if things like pipewire generate them but I have no idea how for that
Not to belabor the point, but I was messing with my SF6 mods the other day and actually reintroduced the crackling because I forgot to put
PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC
back heh. I have no idea what else can fix it
Looking at the log, I got nothingI've tried that with many games all of which yeild the same result where the issue is still present. Right now I'm bumping the resolution down from 4k to 1440p as I read it could be related to frame time issues. Which doesn't make too much sense if I'm using fsr to render at a lower resolution and upscale but at this point I'm trying everything
Appreciate you looking at the log at least tho
But maybe the 6700xt just doesn't like 4k resolutions, who knows at this point
Heres another log of another game, couldnt use actual pastebin as the log exceeded their size limit https://paste.gloriouseggroll.tv/?8e2eafa242a34926#87Us9vW359XqeMzJt3UYxf1dG8SHYqPQGf6cRGDFreNR

Does anyone know how I can raise the minimum frequency the gpu runs at? Ive read the issue can be caused by the gpu dropping frequency suddenly
you can do that with LACT
I've read about corectrl but not lact, is that installed in bazzite or will it need to be installed? And does it auto startup on boot and stay open while in gamescope?
Scratch that first question, figured out how to install it. Guess the main concern is making sure it starts at boot and also stays open in gamescope
I don't want to call it too soon but after installing lact and just setting the performance mode to high clocks, I have yet to notice the issue once so far. Think that also answers my previous question of it running at boot/gamescope
I'd like to thank everyone in here who helped me try to diagnose, troubleshoot, and provide potential solutions to this issue. The last option I tried increasing the gpu minimum frequency, while it helped, the issue kept creeping up still. As much as I wanted to give a Linux system a fair shot, it's just not working for me, I loaded up windows and the issue is actually gone now and I'm sticking with what works. But thank you again to everyone who tried to help me with this! Maybe I'll pick it up again one day if things are better
always welcome back and try again, took a few back and forths for me back in 2008-2009 before i fully switched, and it was related to minor annoying hardware issues then too 🙂
