Is Putting ESD Protection Diode Critical in a USB Line?
Am designing an electronics board, i have limited space in my board so I want to confirm if putting an ESD IC is necessary, can i do away with it. If i dont add it are there chances that my design will not work.

Putting ESD diode is critical indeed, it actually helps to give your design more level of protection from transient discharge. Though the design will still work if the ESD is not available but it might be vulnerable to damage, human body discharge and Discharge from the Air.
It also dependent on the application, you might trade it off if its a low end device, but for sensitive device try to add it.
Yes, it is essential. I recommend going with discrete diodes in SOD-523 or even smaller packages and fitting those diodes at all costs.
