I'd say they're fairly similar. Cloud might have more of an edge but there's always a need for data engineers as well.
I don't have a strong anecdote for it but the use cases for both are strong, whether it's talking about companies wanting to modernize their cloud infrastructure or companies wanting to improve their data infra
Both has "trap career roles", like cloud support engineers, or data engineering but all you're doing is writing config management for some airflow system
so i'd avoid those
if you care about opportunities, growth, etc
the traditional "Software engineering" track with an emphasis in cloud or an emphasis in data are always good options

I’m currently already a Data Engineer, but not a software engineering type of role. What would I have to do to transition from DE to SWE with emphasis in data, and how do I look for roles like that? Do I have to work on my portfolio/programming skill or anything to get there?
It seems like cloud really does have an edge. I can’t find any Data engineer role in my region, but lots of companies are still hiring cloud engineer.
Merry Christmas btw @totaldev. Appreciate you

I'd make sure your portfolio specifically calls out building stuff, especially w.r.t building a platform, or building a pipe line (important: NOT maintaining or supporting a pipeline), or building something where you played a big role in.
as for the "how do i look for roles like that", it's a tossup cause many "SWE" roles are "SWE - Cloud" or "SWE - Data" in disguise and the best way to do is during the interview panel.
Most of my interviews are with high TC companies so they usually have that distinction already there, for example twitch at one point had "Software Engineer - Devops", and home depot had "Software Engineer - Data", and pinterest had "Software Cloud Engineer", for example
It's not a fun answer, but given how much smaller the amount of jobs there are for SWE, i'd still try to spray your resume everywhere and funnel them down as you learn about the role if they fullfill "builders" type roles that you'd be looking for in cloud
