hemming selvedge jeans
Hey y'all, I've never gotten jeans hemmed before. I'm aware I'd have to get them chainstiched to preserve the selvedge, but idk if i need that for what I'm looking for.
Main thing I want is a plain hem/no cuff that I can still let out of I want to. Is there any way to do this?

You don't need to get them chainstitched to preserve it
The selvedge is how the material is manufactured on the loom before being made into jeans
You can one hundred percent just have them hemmed with a normal lock stitch
Chainstitch is to increase the roping effect as they fade. Would just take them to any tailor and have them pin at length you want while you’re wearing them if you don’t care about roping
Yeah chainstitching is just so that you get roping
And honestly you get roping on non chainstitched hems anyway
It’s distinctly not important
Yeah it’s really only a matter of how fast you want it to show up and how extreme. Which only come if you are letting them get real gross and crusty
I need to write a raw denim for normal people guide
My contribution: just wash your damn jeans
You are right haha
I would recommend washing them a few times before hemming. Mine shrunk a bit, and now they are a little short. 😭
Oh they're not raws, they're 105s in 2 year wash. Probably should've led with that. But good to know that chainstitching doesn't matter for my needs! Thanks guys
