They can go as simple as a SSN trace, criminal record, maybe pulled credit records for address history. They had the option to upload supporting docs (optional). They did not verify any employment history in one user's case.
Another user had a mixed experience. They did clear it and the process took a while since they ran two checks on them, on in the U.S. and another in Europe. The candidate-facing UX is subpar - it's all automated and not friendly....

First Advantage
User experience: They try to get you to login to your payroll using Truv to verify employment (my J1 blocked it with 2FA). Then they also wanted 7 years addresses and 7 years employment. And a drug test within 48 hours of the email. This is by far the hardest BCG I've had. They said it takes 5-10 days to process.
FAVD (First Advantage) is a mixed bag, so use best judgement.
Fieldprint
So far it's been confirmed they only do criminal.
HireRight
Most seem to be okay.
Very few one offs will be posted below:
User:
I did not mention or lead on to my current job with “Company B/J2”, only “Company A/J1 (with the implied intention of resigning)”. But somehow, HireRight requested “all of my documents for verification of employment” from a company they use for VOE, Certree, and one of those documents was for “Company B/J2”!
Checkr
Most checkr cases are OK. One-offs posted below:
From user:
My Checkr background check that I ordered on myself came CLEAR even though it was "Orange" on the employment history part (I didn't respond to it, but got bombarded with notifications to fill it out for further verification) They did call my school to verify education manually, though.

TrueScreen
TrueScreen has a very nice QA on their website where they describe how they verify work history. They use TWN and..: (drumroll) IRS data. They even list the forms required. The IRS is tight as a drum when it comes to taxpayer privacy. If it weren’t then the tax returns if a certain former president would have leaked years ago.
The only way they can get information from the IRS is if you sign the form giving them permission. The lesson here is that if a BGC wants you to sign an IRS form then the answer needs to be hell no. This is none of their business anyway. If anyone has any other information on TrueSceeen, please let us know.
