How does music shape fashion? - Topic of the day 12/2/23
Whether it be your own connection between music and your personal style or the connection on a broader scale, how do you feel music shapes fashion? (Disregarding specific artists who have shifted into the fashion sphere) + Post your Spotify wrapped along with a fit of yours!

my playlists are like super vibe heavy based on abstract shit. like your clothes, i think your playlists are another extension of yourself. it's apart of the narrative you choose to make for yourself (whether or not it's intended to be understood by a external audience) and it's all super duper cool. i know someone here mentioned dressing for a character before and i think that's brilliant too
in the same way that you might pair the fragrance with the outfit, i don't think music is any different at all. it's your soundtrack. it's how you choose to set the mood and dictate the day you want for yourself
I think fashion and punk are hugely intertwined, I love looking at what people wear when I go to shows. Lots of surplus military, diy, and workwear. I do find it difficult to meld my love of ivy fits with the punk attitude but it’s something I’m working on as a unique style
If u dont know carti I can’t trust ur fashion opinion 😤😤😤
I dunno, this year its pretty accurate in terms of vibes. But I think everyone defines themselves and their image in ways that aren’t ever cut and dry.
Agree that fashion and music are intertwined, like Zhu has crazy style and one of his music videos was basically a runway show
I'm not too sure what my music really says about my style this year other than I've been dealing with shit
I think Bad Bunny is a style icon so if we are judging my vibe off Spotify Wrapped, I’m okay with it
I think the only way in which my music consumption and fashion consumption share similarities is in how my methods of discovery are similar. If I find that I'm in an era where I'm attempting to search for the historical influences and social circumstances that made a genre of music emerge, I would often try and employ the same form of engagement when searching for clothes. It's all about method.
if someone can find a similarity between my style and my music I'll paypal ya $2
We both have Lana in #2 hell yea
going to jazz clubs and concert halls is the only thing i do regularly where i dont feel too out of place wearing a tie and a jacket so that definitely has an effect on my wardrobe. being into jazz and seeing those old photos of miles davis, bill evans, coltrane etc was how i got interested in more trad/ivy stuff in the first place.
I don’t think I would be upset if “queer woman” is where I end up in fashion too. I do think that queerness in music has been especially influential for me, particularly trans feminine artists.
Wednesday is so good
I definitely look like an ambient mf
Oo I really like everything I’ve heard of William basinski’s
My favorite album this year I think.
My spotify wrapped looks TOTALLY random, which seems about right- apparently Im at the intersection of grunge, kpop, irish fiddle tunes, and Japanese classical Honkyoku, but my top genre is Jazz. And my top songs are totally thrown off by "professional" obligations (like wearing what you want vs the office dress code?)
Totally random also accurately describes my sense of fashion
Ah man I missed what would have been my favourite topic of the day. Still gotta say my piece, tho!
My getting into fashion came from my interest in music. Typical small town boy hears song that changes life and now it's his whole identity blah blah blah.
But engaging in fashion was my way to connect to the scene in a way I couldn't otherwise. There weren't local music stores or venues or shows, but I could dress like the people I looked up to.
I think because of that, my fashion tastes are all aspirational in a similar way. It's still fundamentally a way of connecting to something that interests me in an abstract way.
Not to mention lower level musicians are notoriously artsy on shoestring budgets. I've learned a lot about how to style basic shit in a way that's intriguing and evocative from going to shows and seeing people in that space.
Last point is that I think my wardrobe reflects my music collection. There are outfits and pieces that I love because of how they make me feel connected to the music and the scene. It imbues a sense of meaning that makes what I'm engaging in feel significant, important, and worthy of attention/care.
