Barbour jacket sizing

I want to get a Barbour jacket and have it narrowed down to a Beaufort in either sage or olive. I usually wear a size 42, but the 42 Beaufort felt really big in store, even with a sweater and tshirt underneath. Is this the intended fit? I also tried a 40, but the shoulders were a bit snug.

I think it’s a good fit. It’s supposed to be loose. I have a 38” chest size and I sized up to a 42” Beaufort, so that it’d be comfortable to wear it over a sport coat. Every time I put it on I’m wondering if it’s too big on me, but I think it’s not actually, maybe the sleeves are a bit long on me. Your fit, however, seems good to me. Maybe think about what would be the bulkiest layers you want to wear underneath it.

Thanks! I have a 39” chest, so your size is a useful comparison

It looks great to me. I just bought a Bedale and agree with ghostdog that you might consider how many layers you actually want to wear under it. The internet wisdom is to go for a size with room to accommodate layers, which may not be the fit you want if you don't plan to layer up with it. I went for a larger fit and what I've found is that now that its cold enough to really layer up, I'm reaching for my parka instead of the Barbour. It's not a very warm jacket so functionally it can be a little tricky.

Hmm, I’ve got a mid-weight sweater and shirt on in this pic. I can imagine maybe adding another layer, but otherwise this is it I did try on the zip-in liner to give an idea of what it would be like with another layer, and it fit nicely

Cozy, but still roomy enough for an extra layer. Maybe that means it’s too big?

imo it’s pretty much impossible to go too big with a Barbour. Plus you look kind of young so odds are you fill out over the next decade. Lastly, order from cox the saddler and save a couple hundred bucks For me, I still like to have no pulling/straining when I’m wearing the thickest sweaters I own even if that means it’ll be a bit big with just a shirt on Plus that leaves room for liner + heavy sweater if you want to wear your Barbour below freezing

I think you found your size. You said the 40” was snug in the shoulders. You dont want that. If you can fit a liner under the 42” and it’s still comfortable, you’re golden imo. You’ll get used to the roomier fit

Before you know it you’ll be chasing down vintage Barbours on eBay. Seriously - they are so good and can be found for 100-125.
