Cotton Ties, Yes or No?
I am looking to purchase a new work wardrobe. I am a high school teacher. I am considering cotton ties, because I like the texture. Good idea or no?

yes as long as you wear a jacket over the shirt
the cotton ties btw are good for anything as long as the event doesn't call for a formal tie like a wedding or funeral
just be sure to get good quality ties no matter the material

Do I have a biased view of the matter due to MFA and this discord or does every high school teacher in the US wear shirt/sweater/tie combos ?

was a big mix in my school
some teachers wore a suit and tie, some wore a hoodie. and everything in between
that's also my french high school experience
I have a lot of colleagues that wear polos, but that's just not my thing.
yeah a jacket and ocbd is a better look than a short sleeve polo imo
I think a polo is a much harder fit to pull off than one would think at first
Polo on its own I dislike, long sleeve knit polo under a jacket sounds interesting
Yes to cotton ties. Very summery. Casual vibe.
Teachers wearing polos was fairly standard. Unsure if still is. Seems like the "dad move," ie, "look, I am adequately respectable, for a modest price and inoffensively." If that's your jam nothing's wrong with it
Oxford cloth button-down shirts would probably be seen as fairly formal in most places. Feels like a northeast high school teacher thing much more than ... anything else probably (in US context.) Especially with tie.
Adding the sweater for winter even more so. Feels like somewhere in the ivy, trad, british portion of the spectrum.
Overall to me this combo feels like "guys listen up, this is high school. You are adults, more or less. I will treat you like adults. You treat me like an adult. We're here to learn, so you can build for the next step. Any questions? No. Great."
Versus, let's say, "hey you beautiful people, good morning, what's up. Okay cool so what we're gonna do today is this if that's good with you, yeah?" Or "Sit down and shut the fuck up and do what I say, or else."
At least this is probably how I felt in high school though it's been a while so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ -- but my point is that you're probably not expressing hardass, but definitely not expressing that it's fun and games and you're trying to be a cool cat.

Wool tie = less formal and wintery
Silk tie = more formal

Linen, cotton, hemp, all casual and summery. I don't recall seeing a hemp tie but I know they exist by sheer virtue of statistics

But tbh, go find a vintage store, or goodwill, etc. You'll find tonsssssss of tie on the cheap because people just don't wear them anymore. I've found $350 mint Turnbull and Asser ties for two dollars lmao
