Any way to make old dry scratchy wool more wearable?

I have a really cool hand knit vintage sweater but its like really dry if that makes any sense and unbearably coarse and scratchy to wear. Is there any way to soften the textile without ruining it?

Any particular products you recommend? Most of what comes up in a search is for hair.
