90s Outfit Advice
The theme for my company’s Dinner and Dance is 90s. I was born in 2000, so I have no personal experience of the 90s.
Based on a brief Google Search, I came to the conclusion that the 90s fashion trend is to intentionally not care about dressing up, dressing up as if you didn’t care to dress up if you will.
That’s honestly disappointing. I don’t care to dress up in daily life, this is supposed to be my opportunity to dress up and stand out. Therefore, I don’t want to just wear baggy jeans like every one else would.
Currently, I’m intending to pay homage to the 90s theme, by way of the colour shades. The colours associated with the 90s appear to be of certain hues, I found some pieces that to me evokes 90s but I am not sure if they come together as an outfit.
I’ll be sending some screenshots and I want some feedback on whether they come together as a fit (and if you fancy yourself an expert, whether it speaks 90s).

This is the only bottom to my liking that I feel says 90s
Currently, my objective is find the best top to match this bottom.
Top 1
Concerned that the pink might be too strong and give off obnoxious vibes
Neither of those scream 90s to me. The pink/black top maybe early 90s if you're doing kind of a Saved By the Bell thing
How do you normally dress?
Top 2
I like that it’s almost the same colour scheme as Top 1 but the Pink is less overpowering. However, funnily enough, I feel like the hood not being pink is a downer.
I can’t really pinpoint what do I really not like about this top, but maybe too much black.
That also screams very early 90s, almost 80s.
There is no prevailing 90s look, and the idea that the 90s was about "dressing like you didn't care" is either just patently untrue or a strong exaggeration. If you want to go full grunge, maybe.
What I'd suggest is share how you normally dress and maybe some of us elder millennials can help you tweak it to fit the theme
Top 3
I feel like aesthetically this might fit well with the bottom I’m currently looking into. However, my qualm about this is that it might be too muted overall.
HAHAHA my honest answer to that is that normally I wear clothes for the sole purpose of not being nude.
Instead, I think it’d be useful to share what I hope to achieve and what are my no-gos for this 90s outfit.
I wouldn't go colour block pants, colour block top.
even if you want to go early 90s look at something like how zack morris dressed, usually you had some muted stuff to go along with pops of colour
a big thing with 90s fashion is fit, even in saved by the bell (which ended in '93) things were fitting a bit big. by the mid-late 90s everything fit pretty big
Would you say it’s similar to current day oversized tee trend?
Yeah, I'd say that's where the current trend comes from. Style right now is very 90s. But like I said, it's a ten year window and things absolutely ebbed and flowed. I think your instinct to wear pops of colour will work because it's very deliberate, I'd just caution against going all in because you also dont want to look like screech
(unless you do and you want to go full costume)
I want to be loud but I don’t want to screech haha
I want it to be noticeable that I deliberately dressed to the theme and not just put together 2 articles of clothing that I already have to just pass off
yeah that's fair. you do almost have to exaggerate it a bit. is the age demo if the event mostly people around your age
(i should also clarify, like i grew up in the 90s but i was still a kid, i was 12 in 1999)
Shit Zach Morris was fitted
ie. I attended a Euphoria themed party in a discoball shirt (you wouldn’t wear it in a normal day)
you could always just wear a bunch of shit backwards and go as a kriss kross
Logistically speaking… how does one handle bodily functions wearing suspenders/backwards? 😂
Pants were baggy enough that you just undo your belt and they fall down
Top middle speaks the most to me. It fits your advice with the muted bottom, but the shirt makes it loud enough with the colours and the funky fit.
Any recommendations of online stores that ships worldwide that’d carry something with such vibes?
For reference of the other people that might check out my thread later, I’d say bottom right is too much for me.
Therefore, I’m trying to put together something between the range of top middle and bottom right.
