Wool Coat Too Big
So I purchased a new big coat from Facebook Marketplace, but it’s uh too big.
It’s a 50% wool coat, and looks like this (but when I’m wearing it, it’s pretty long and my hands are pretty covered)
How would I go about making this smaller so that I can wear it, cuz I would like to. My main problem is that the sleeves are too long, so I was thinking of getting the sleeves tailored (5 inches per sleeve?) How much would this cost typically?
Should I throw it into the dryer first? Would this shrink it (even tho it’s 50% wool). Would it damage it?
Thanks

Post a pic with you wearing it - there's a good chance all you need to do is having the sleeves shortened, long coats are cool. Definitely don't try to shrink it, you'll ruin it.
Definitely don’t put it in the dryer
Shortening the sleeves from the bottom is an easy job for any tailor. Won't be too expensive.
A jacket like this is mostly likely dry clean only, don't put it in your washer or your dryer
If I cuff the sleeves (will be shortened at tailor)
Without cuffing it
Yeah it’s pretty big, too big lol
Feels like if you had the sleaves tailored it would look pretty good
Esp open and you do have to keep in mind that you are prb. not going to wear it with a t-shirt
yeah lmao, I just woke up when I took that picture haha
thanks!
Overcoats are sized to go over sweaters, sport coats, light jackets, etc. Body is probably fine given that. Length is fine. Shoulders seem ok. Sleeves are okay to be long on an overcoat but not that long. I'd say maybe 2 inches longer than a sport coat is okay, so they bunch a little up your arm and you can slightly tuck your hands in when it's cold, but more than that is probably too much. Shorter for the "perfect" length is good too. I'd definitely tailor those. There's far too much for a to do turnback cuffs IMO. Depending on the thickness of the material the tailor may be able to tuck it under rather than cut it off. Should not be too expensive, $30-40 is normal.
Is it odd to wear overcoats / chesterfields over turtlenecks?
I'm no expert in winter wear but I wear my big coat with a scarf. fills in the volume. and looks more complete imo. yours looks cool even without tho
No why would it be?
Just making sure im not committing a faux pas (i should stop caring about that tho lol)
I wear overcoat with turtleneck. If it has a nice lapel and collar even better
Overcoats go over stuff. I don't think there's a set of really specific rules. My personal idea of good overcoat layering is: nice looking overcoat goes over nice looking clothes. And that an overcoat goes over a layer that isn't a shirt. I wouldn't wear an overcoat over a raggedy hoodie, or a tshirt, or a dress shirt. Otherwise... rock on
But I could easily not be in the know on overcoat etiquette so yknow, cross-check anything I write. :)
Thanks for the input!
I put it on with a turtleneck zip up, scarf, and beanie and it doesn’t seem to massive anymore lol
I’ll get the sleeves shortened, I’ve cuffed it in this photo
is it too long though? It goes up to my shins
Looks solid to me.
Overcoat length is subject to trends, however, an overcoat is intended to be practical and one that goes a bit below the knee is practical. Keeps you warmer and drier than one that ends at mid thigh, right?
Looking good! I suggest wearing the coat a few times first after getting the sleeves shortened, and then decide if you wanna get the coat length adjusted ☺️
You can also wear the scarf under the coat btw but urs looks good already
Alright thank you!
Oh I see, thanks!!
