Backup archive retention: How long?
How long should backup archives be kept? Are there any other best practices that override that duration, such as retaining the last backup of each version taken before the server was updated?

If u have the storage, the longer the better. No harm in keeping extra backups
I personally do 2 weeks
As for The one off backs up, like when updating, I just keep those indefinitely, and only remove them when needed, (generally after the next update)
Storage is super cheap, so there’s no harm in keeping them
