where in the world can I get similar coats to this?

I got this coat a while back from my mum (who was getting rid of it, she couldn't remember where she got it though) and it has been absolutely wonderful. I'm pretty sure it's women's clothing but I don't really care, it looks and fits great and is super comfortable, and holds up well even when the weather is starting to get warm. I just cannot for the life of me find similar coats, it looks kind of trenchcoaty, but those are all super thick and stiff, or leather, whereas this is quite light and flexible (its a polyester/nylon mix I think). I would really like to figure out what this kind of coat is, even better if there are places I can get another (some colours other than black would be nice...)

Womens section at most mall brands here (au) has these in pretty much every season, esp autumn, though admittedly I rarely see a nice quality black. Nicer semi-professional womens stores almost always have ones that are either comfy or with an interesting cut, but unless you're aussie it's kind of hard for me to make any suggestions, ha. No tags at all? I'll also admit, this is one of the more tasteful I've seen. The cut, drape, and cuffs are very nice. I can't off the top of my head think of what might pull up exact results, but I'd def look under cardigan before trenchcoat. "open front", "waterfall", "drape front", unsure if it's "hanky hem" since I can't see the bottom of it... These are words I'm seeing, but it doesn't really bring up more results that are evocative of a slightly more structured jacket like this does. oh lol "waterfall jacket" starts grabbing things that feel similar, to me

I'm in Aus so that helps, thanks. I'll look into waterfall jackets. Wow, that brings up shockingly similar results. I never would have thought to even try waterfall as a keyword That and cardigan In fact I think I found the exact jacket https://www.kmart.com.au/product/trench-look-coatigan-s160924/

Do you reckon it looks better in black or would some brighter colours be nice?

It really depends on your style! I think the black is a nice color, other dark colors aren't bad and will be practical. I reckon I'm biased though because when I shopped in the womenswear section the brighter color choices were abysmal. As long as you like it and think you can find some undershirt and pants that'll work, it'll be fine! If it's just pie in the sky, I'm a fan of this kind of thing in warm yellows or oranges, blue-grey, or multicolored/patterned if you can find one you like that has a good cut. :)

I have no idea what kind of undershirt goes well with different colours I was thinking purple could be really nice If I can find one

Ooh, a purple could be nice. A bright one might make a good statement piece, a lavender would be nice in spring, or a darker grey-ish purple or darker, redder vivid purple would just show a little personality. The hard part would definitely be finding one with the fit/shape you like in a good color 😅 As for matching undershirt and such, you can always ask here or in other fashion spaces if something goes, or start collecting some outfit inspo you like from other people and taking notes on what colors they wear together often :)

lavendar is what i was thinking but i imagine its a very hard colour to find on such an uncommon piece of clothing

For a cardigan in knit or felt or fleece/faux fur it's pretty common, but for something more like what you already have it'd definitely be a hunt. It would be a really fun piece to own though 🤔

Well, thank you for your help! you got me further in one day than googling on and off over a couple of weeks. I may report back when i find something.
