Server hardware
Hello.
Im making a server thats gonna have at least 500 players online at the same time.
What hardware do I need for this and do I need additional software/plugins etc?
Also, I wanna use pterodactyl panel, is that a good choice?
Thank you.

There isn't any stable Software to do it
No matter what hardware
Woooo this question again lol
Lmao
For a network it can be done but not on the same world/"server"
Im making a network.
I dont mean in the same world/server
Lol you didn't need to delete your message to tag him
You should probably focus on what you have now.
Getting 500 people to want to play your server at once is a feat in itself.
I have the people
Just, I need to know what hardware and software etc I best use
Lol.
That question isn't possible to answer
With as little info as you've given
What info do you need?
How do servers like hypixel do it? Or cubecraft or servers like that?
Hypixel? Dozens of physical machines and thousands of hours in development time.
And what info would you need for an answer?
Do you already have a server network setup already?
Nope
So you're wanting to go from scratch to a full minigame network setup?
Correct
I definitly plan on having developers
But I am gonna be the one setting up the servers/software etc.
Where are you getting these players from if you don't have a server set up yet?
Do you have any plans on what the minigames are going to be?
What versions?
Biggg community. One of the biggest in whole netherlands/belgium
I'm just here to say, lower your expectations so you don't get disappointed
I think just the regular, bedwars, skywars and some custom gamemodes. But I was also thinking a survival SMP?
A survival gamemode allongside minigames
Those are questions you'll need to answer before you can get an answer on what hardware/how much hardware.
We have done thorough research before coming up with that estimate :P
You need SPECIFIC plans before somebody can tell you how much you'll need.
And lets say just an SMP? Like DonutSMP. They have about 2k players on at the same time.
They all have very large multi unit servers that are running their own custom jar files
Multi unit servers? Like multiple machines hosting the same server?
Yes
Like, full scale data centers for the larger servers
Oh damn
Donutsmp has multiple servers, it isn't just one backend server running all of that.
So if you meet another player on a server like that. Its possible that they are "playing on a different machine/server"
I'm pretty sure each of their gamemodes run on their own backends. So if you're playing on the hardcore server, all of those players are "together".
They only have 1 gamemode tho, hardcore. And I heard all the players play on the same map
Except the spawn/lobby tho
Unfortunately none of the servers (afaik) make any of this info public. So we can only offer our best guesses as to how they do it specifically
Hmm alright, but where do these servers find developers that can do this?
They post paid job listings for java developer jobs, paying them a ton of money for their services
Actual job listings, hiring "experienced" devs.
Paying them 6 figures too ðŸ˜
https://hypixel.net/jobs/
For example
Hypixel Forums
Jobs
So if I just become a really experienced java dev like them, i will probably know how to do that?
Well, as you get experience working with the platform
You'll learn more about it.
Going from "nothing" to "500+ concurrent user network" is a HUGE undertaking
If you say you have the 500 people already, probably 10% will join and be active
Like a "most people will not take you seriously and just laugh at you" kind of undertaking.
Hmm, alr I understand you guys. Right now I have a small server. And the community im talking about has thousanddsss of members. Im nog the owner of that community tho. Just have high role
Get a dedicated server from a host
Like bloom
Get around the max ram
I dont think 1 dedicated server is gonna cut it tho
Just one dedicated machine? What about redundancy? Wouldn't want a single node going down to take 500+ players offline. The opportunity cost there is infinite.
It will
"Just get a dedicated machine" is a real :Clueless: tier answer tbh
Agree
1 server aint gonna cut it
500 players?
128gbs of ram and a 16 core cpu with 40tbs of bandwidth is like the best answer
Yes
It
Will
It’s like the most straightforward answer
If you need more power buy another one
"How do I setup an entire minecraft minigame network"
just get a dedicated machine (:
Yeah
Ur talking about hardware
and btw, 128gb of ram isnt going to be enough for 500 in my understanding
I realize my answers aren't directly helpful, but that isn't either.
The amount of RAM itself isn't the important limitation.
It would be the cpu
Yeah
Just a question, do you have a minecraft server senor leche?
I'd be hard pressed to say "just" the CPU tbh. It really depends on "what" the minigames are.
Ip? :O
Just curious tbh
Yeah i wasnt saying that would be the only limitation of using a host
I mean you could get more servers with less ram but more cpu power
Like, running 50 individual spleef servers would be able to run 10 players each any halfway decent dedicated box, that'll be 500 players. Tie that together with velocity and some lobby plugin. Boom question answered. Right? Right??
as someone that knows next to nothing about servers, i would like to bring up aternos
It's private for my friends and friends of them
But in any case, figure out what you want to do. Once you have more hard plans on what you want to do, we'd be able to answer what you would need to do to do it best.
I know a few sysadmins that are known if you need help with anything
Sounds good to me
nahhh feather on top 🤧
