Topic of the day 8/25/23 - Throwbacks

What's a throwback style from a previous decade that you'd like to see (or are currently seeing) come back? Are there any specific styles from past decades that you really enjoy, or any specific throwback styles that inspire you?

I'm enjoying the elements from the 70s that are in right now, particularly the sleazy tailoring and looser suits. It's something I don't actually get the chance to work into my own fits a lot but I'm really enjoying it. Also the 90s throwbacks in streetwear are cool, sue me.

Something that id love to see come back meaningfully is the extremely loud extremely structural look of the 70s that came from the work Tommy Nutter and Edward Sexton did for the beatles, elton john, mick jagger, etc Aside from really favoring bold colors and patterns which i feel is pretty lacking outside of Alessandros gucci it also featured a lot of tailoring details that are pretty absent in modern clothes The pagoda shoulder and wide bellied peak lapels are a big one, as well as contrast edge taping Its something you can try to replicate and certainly alessandro michele and tom ford have taken a lot of inspiration from tommy nutters work directly but aside from spending a boatload on the good tailoring from those brands or getting lucky on a good nutters or ysl jacket on ebay it is incredibly rare to find things that truly capture that style The 70s strike me as the last time there was real mainstream acceptance of a suit that wasnt indended to be officewear

Vintage ones seem to usually max out at like a 32W

The rise of the wrangler flare has been really interesting I never even considered wrangler, I put it in the “exists purely on legacy” bucket but those pants have made a real case for themselves

I haven't tried them yet Don't want to deal with the sizing Especially for something that's 100% poly

This is anecdotal but I feel like there has been a move away from polyester suiting (apart from more technical/utilitarian suits), which may contribute to this change as well. Synthetics tend to look and drape a bit different than worsted wool and I feel they complement the 70s cuts well. I feel like a lot of the bolder looking suits I encounter at thrift are 100% polyester.

I am pretty anti wrangler wrancher And its a take that i have from wearing them a lot They are too synthetic to work well in most cases Cant dress em up cause they look like plastic, cant wear em with most things you associate wrangler with cause again they look like plastic and not rugged cowboy workwear Its the same issue i get with most of the vintage flares i find

I also noticed that with ranchers Nothing quite drapes like poly

There's a euro brand which was really popular on r/mf I mean I'm on a shoestring budget. You can probably get them easily for around $120+ But I haven't found any in that 70-90 USD shipped but good sweet spot Or a more reasonable rate thrifted

Marc Jacobs and Gucci kind of brought this back briefly with their men's and women's lines but I would love some more 80s power jackets in fun colors/patterns. My parents would roll in their premature graves if they heard me say that.

I’m glad bucket hats came back
The Real Digs ™
Bucket hats are in a great place where they are kind of getting memed on unless you can pull them off with a cool fit Its a nice feeling to get a fit off with a bucket and flex on ‘em 😤

Yes it is, although tbh even if it does look a little silly that’s fine, world could use more fun
The Real Digs ™
It definitely can add a nice whimsy to a fit which i love Bonus whimsy when you flip the front up

Love the look of skinny jeans and I’m sad I missed my chance to wear them without being made fun of by teenagers.

Aaron 🍍11mo ago
Well if you wear them here you’ll get made fun of by slightly older than teenagers

I can’t say I’m too informed about 60s fashion, but I love the look of Mad Men, particularly the glasses.
