Raspberry Pi 4 for self-hohsting

Greetings! I've always wanted to create a minecraft server for me and my friends. It will be for 8 to 12 people and I was questioning myself if a Raspberry Pi 4 has the necessary specs to power up this project. The idea is to self-host everything into a Raspberry or a cheap single board computer and using my home router to access the server. It's a good idea? It's better to cloud host? Anyone has any tip? Thanks!

not recommended tbh. Pi's aren't known for their strong single-core performance, so you could host a server for a couple people but it would likely be maxing out what the Pi is capable of at that point. 8-12 players is just a pipe dream. storage speed would also be a limiting factor, on top of processing power.

If you're only doing 8-12 people, and its a lightweight server (not a lot of plugins/mods) you might be able to get away with the free tier on oracle cloud vm generally speaking, cloud hosts are 1000000x better than hosting it yourself

I see, what specs do you recommend for this project? I want to keep the pc as small and low-powered as possible, I am thinking of a Intel NUC-like PC, but they are too expensive, what do you think?

just keep in mind, its a free tier, so they will offer little support if u have issues, i just recommend making backups and putting them externally, (like dropbox or google drive) i think the doc is a bit outdated, but generally, u should be able to get something working

do you know if I can keep the backups locally in my PC? do I need to sync with any external tool? do I need to program some kind of script? (like getting programmed downloads with wget or curl) i will check it out! thanks again :)
