Slayers Artist Rui Araizumi Falsely Accused of Using AI to Make Art
๐จ Rui Araizumi, the artist renowned for his work on the Slayers Series, published a new book of his fan art at Comiket 102 earlier this month. Yet, a flurry of accusations from Twitter users falsely claimed that his artwork was AI-generated. ๐น๏ธ๐ค
๐ข๐ In response to the criticisms, Araizumi shattered these misconceptions by releasing a video that peeled back the layers of his artwork, showing the raw process from initial sketch to finished product. An abundance of similar comments continued to flood in, but Araizumi swayed the tide, reassuring his fans, "I'm drawing things properly! ๐๏ธ๐
In the wake of proving his innocence, Araizumi made an apologetic gesture to his folloeiwrs who had to witness his art being scrutinized. He sincerely apologized to those who had purchased his art book, stating, "For those who...picked up the book and... enjoyed it, if I have caused you any heartache, I am truly sorry." ๐๐ He has made clear he's kept record of those hurling harsh accusations, hinting at a potential future legal response. ๐๐ต๏ธ

English Release of Susumu Higa's Okinawa Manga Delayed Due to Chinese Printer
๐๏ธ The English release of Susumu Higa's Okinawa manga has been delayed ๐ due to publishing issues. Joint publishers Mangasplaining and Fantagraphics Books switched printers after their Chinese contractor wanted to erase Taiwan mentions from the interview included in the manga. โ The original release was scheduled for July, but the issue pushed it ๐ back to August 22.
๐ Okinawa features the impacts of war on the Okinawan people, caught between invading American forces and Japan, once their colonizer, bringing the past to life in the present day. ๐ฅ The arc is split into two closely connected manga ๐งฉ, Sword of Sand and Mabui. It will be serialized 2 to 3 times per month, with a collective print copy planned to be out in Winter 2022 from Fantagraphics Books. โ๏ธ
๐ Jocelyne Allen translated the manga for the Mangasplaining newsletter, while Patrick Crotty was responsible for lettering, and Andrew Woodrow-Butcher took up editing duties. The manga was initially published in English by Fantagraphics Books in January 2019. ๐ท๏ธ๐๏ธ
