In an SMP, how would you address possible sorting system lag?

Hi there, I am building an SMP server and just thought about sorting systems. The usage of hoppers is a possible source of lag at all, specially if there are multiple sorting systems, as far as I am aware. I am not sure (can't remember rn) if paper already addresses this issue, so would be helpful to know. If not, would you implement some sort of filtering system that avoids the usage of hoppers? (i.e. pipes, etc)

chunk hoppers etc exists to help with this issue wildchests removes the need for hopper for collecting items
