Dedicated Server
I want to be as efficient and save as much money as possible. I'm going to build my own server and run it off a service provider.
I know I'm going to be limited to a lot of things by just simply renting a vps monthly which is where im at right now. I want to have as much headroom as possible to keep the server running as fast as possible and never worry about running out of memory.
I know having a dedicated machine is the best thing for a highly populated server. Mine is growing and I have a lot of plugins that are constantely running and being executed by players. So I'm going to be building a beefy one. My questions now are what are the biggests things I need to know about switching over to dedicated mode after I've built my server. What would the steps or key things I would need to know and do asap.

its not the best.
its only worth it for a big network
with multiple servers
and usually also worth it if u have other services u need to run on it, although for websites etc u can either host it for free for static sites, or get a cheap vps to host the site/other services
"plugins being used constantly" doesnt mean u need a beefy "dedicated", a plugin can be plently lightweight with even hundred+ players
it very much depends on what those plugins do and how optimised they are
okay. Well I plan on running a 200 player server. Nothing crazy but I talked to a guy who runs a 200 player server as well which ares are very similar. I dont know some of the other plugins he used but he said it costs him about $3k a month. I dont know the backend of it but I dont want to ever have to spend a quarter of that on mine to keep it running
he is wasting a ton of money.
200 players does NOT require 3k
he's being ripped off tbf
or even close.
a very well optimised 16 gb of ram (usually means 4 dedicated threads if buying from a dedicated host), of r9 7950x, could probably even do it
sure u will have to sacrifice some gameplay parts, but so would u anyways
or if u so want a dedi, hetzner has great priced r9 7950x3d dedis
unless he was talking about paying staff which I dont. But right now I'm paying 60$ a month for a shared vps. Its really good right now but I think in the future its going to tank a bit and take up a lot of memory and I really just want to have my own server server to myself
colocating is usually more expensive than renting a dedi
good colocation
I dont want to rent a dedicated. It's just dumb how expensive they are when I can build one for that price and then just rent the server host software for very cheap
+ u have hardware depreciation, initial hardware cost, having to pay if hardware fails
colocation can easily cost 100 bucks+ a month
and thats AFTER u have paid for the dedi
what is colocation?
getting the server hosted at a datacenter
vps are gonna perform worse than mc hosts or baremetal.
hm
+ u also need to do good research as bad colocation exists
So in reality its cheaper to just rent a dedicated machine?
yes
okay ty and what is mc hosts and baremetal?
mc host are hosts that use pterodactyl etc (uses docker) on baremetal, baremetal is what a dedi would be
ur running it on the physical hardware
okay. Im using pufferfish.gg which using pterodactyl so its a dedicated machine already? Just shared?
pufferfish host gives u dedicated hardware
but using vps is still loosing performance
compared to using their minecraft hosting
okay I see now. I am already on a dedicated machine since Im using there premium plan. I thought there budget and premium were both shared
u said u use a vps
they dont have shared vps
or a budget/premium vps only 1 type
that one type gives u dedicated threads
okay I was mistaken then.
easy to figure out, do u access to ssh?
if not ur using the mc hosting
if yes then vps
Im using mc hosting I believe since Im on there premium plan
their budget is shared, but their premium isnt
then u have dedicated threads ;P
well thats good to know
and are not using a vps
okay that solves all my questions then
thanks again for the help as always pro. you've helped me a lot
