last time i messed up the permissions by chmodding /home/ubuntu to 755 i had to delete the entire disk

if you make it so that basically the whole world can see your key, then that key won't work
it literally won't work unless you can use the physical machine
i think you can log in to the physical machine directly without ssh in the website

though you can use nginx/any reverse proxy software for "subdomains" for subdomains
just buy a domain, they are like $10 a year
lots of the domain sites have deals where it's like $2 or something for the first year
then use cloudflare to setup the dns for free
its $2 every year for .xyz
