Router and Relations with MC Server
Hey I've been having some issues with my MC server and it seems to be becaues of the router. We're thinking about moving it to a different house out of the friend group as we have a physical server. Generally what stats should you have on average to sustain 20 players for a router like download and upload. Any help is appreciated thanks.
P.S. please don't how long is a string me ),:

What's the fastest you can get at your house?
Internet speed, from the ISP that is.
When you say from the ISP do you mean just an internet speed test(fast.com etc)?
or what the internet was sold as being able to do
above 10mbps upload and above 100mbps download at least
I think it's 20 upload and 300 download
20 upload will not be enough.
How much would I need?
What's the fastest service you can get at your house?
I do not know
Theoreticals are worthless if the fastest you can get might not be fast enough.
Hmm can server optimizations mod possibly lessen the burden?
I'm running 1.20.1
Lowering render distance, that's the largest factor in how much bandwith you need.
But not the only factor
gotcha we did recently up the render to 15
Would a server running on a route increase the chances of the router crashing?
It seems the largest upload is 35 with spectrum
What server software are you running, if paper, you could change the compression of the packets for less network load with some more cpu load
@Penguin Terminal
penguinterminal has reached level 2!

I'm running forge lmao
Was thinking about switching to fabric
would paper be better?
Well uhh really depends on if you want to run mods or plugins. You have to pick. If you are looking to go with just server side stuff and never client side mods, then go for paper or pufferfish (performance fork of paper), but if your modding, go with fabric
@Penguin Terminal Which of the two would you use if you were trying to get the best performance out of 1.20.1?
Most likely pufferfish (the fork of paper). Plugins are just generally more optimized than mods
Interesting.
ty
also just to make sure I can transfer a no mod forge world to pufferfish?
Most likey, make a backup first just in case, but there shouldn't be any issues. Why were you running forge without mods? Just curious.
I had previously only made forge servers with docker so I forgot it was an option
we played a lot of modded
anyways thank you
Ah ok, wish you luck, if you need anything just ask. If you want more custom options I would recommend purpur (just a fork of pufferfish, so same performance, just with a little added features), but most people don't, but if anything in their config (https://purpurmc.org/docs/Configuration/) looks enticing, you might want to install it.
Purpur Documentation - Configuration
The official documentation for Purpur. Purpur is a fork of Pufferfish (and by extension, Paper) with the goal of providing new and interesting configuration options, which allow for creating a unique gameplay experience not seen anywhere else.
