Ive set up a vanilla Minecraft server on my desktop computer and there is lag for no apparent reason
My brother and I have been trying to play on it, but it's lagging too badly. The lag is most visible when opening chests, crafting tables, interacting with mobs, and viewing players (lots of rubber banding and teleporting). There are no console errors, and the average tick is 7. I've used the command prompt to ping the server 50 times, and I got really low latency (I forget the exact number) with no packet losses. My computer is hardwired into the router, and I'm getting 70Mbps download and 20Mbps upload. I've allocated 20GB of RAM, and when running the server, my CPU (i7 11700k) utilization is sub 10%.
If anyone has any ideas what could be causing this or has troubleshooting tips, I'd greatly appreciate it. My brother has been asking me to set up a server for years, and he finally thought it was up and working, and If I can't fix this, he will be pretty disappointed.

average tick is 7?!!?
its meant to be 20...
u mean mspt?
yes
Got any idea why it could be lagging?
did you try paper server?
I set to 20gb
20 gb is too much for mc
well theres no point in it
Is that really necessary though? From what i understand, my computer should be more then capable of running the server. I defiantly might be wrong, but i doubt it will fix whatever issue is happening. You really think it will help with whatever issue?
and it can cause more lag, although not ping/latency lag as this sounds like it is
can to much hurt the performance?
does it lag when you login using the localhost ip?
we are connecting using the public ipv4 address. is that what you mean by "localhost ip"
I mean is the server hosted on your PC?
If yes, then you can join using the ip "localhost"
yes
Can you try paper server and see if the lag is fixed?
Pufferfish Host | Downloads - Pufferfish Fork
Download Pufferfish and Pufferfish+ Minecraft server jars
It's a fork of paper
I could i guess, is it a lot of work to switch over?
Not much.
Downloading the jar file
Creating a batch file and running it
Accepting eula
Starting the server
That should be it
You need jdk 17 too
ok the paper server is running correctly i believe, you said i need to get jdk to?
ok jdk is installed, and the paper server is up and running
Did you accept the eula
yes. I don't know for sure because my brother is not around to test, but it does seem to be working very well testing the server by myself
I'm not to happy about having to switch to a paper server to fix it, because the vanilla really should have worked, and it feels like whatever the issue was wasn't fixed, but just handle better by paper. either way if it works it works I guess
Ill wait to test with my brother, and if it works ill close the post. Thanks for the help @Invincible Anik @ProGamingDK
