Opinions about Ptero vs AMP? Alternatives?
I've been running into big issues with AMP where configuring a new template for their proprietary mapping is a humongous pain in the ass. I prefer the community by far. Everyone is nice and helpful but the support for games that may not be popular is abysmal as hell.
If stuff is not 100% supported by the app, it's a big :PES2_Shrug:. Ptero took considerably more resources to run though. Like double and more. I'm not even sure why to be frank.
I'm aware of LinuxGSM, I'd just much rather have a UI that my partner can access.
Would there be alternatives to these? Recommendations? Is Ptero worth vertically scaling my VM/server?
Most looking for alternatives I guess so I can try out everything.

Server panels
A game server management panel lets you manage your game server just through a website hosting your panel. Most hosting providers will have one but if you're self hosting or setting one up on a VPS you'll need to install one by yourself. Down below i'll list some choices but i encourage you to look into the subject yourself and choose one best for yourself
pterodactyl [linux]
PufferPanel [linux]
Multicraft [linux] [windows]
AMP [linux] [windows]
crafty [linux] [windows] [mac] (uses python)
More found here
There's a handful more too
More than ptero vs amp*
Personally I haven't had many issues with wings taking too many resources myself. Almost all of the machines I manage have 64gb or 128gb of ram, so take that with a pinch of salt.
For a machine running 50 containers with wings, it's using 2gb of ram and uses about 8% of a single CPU core. Not too sure about panel usage though
I was told only those 2 are worth considering
Maybe it's the panel that cost me loads. I can't tell why but for Satisfactory, Valheim, CS:GO, Teamspeak 3 and The Forest (fresh start). It was taking 1.5gb of ram on Ptero. I'm around 0.3gb ram total here on AMP.
I uninstalled it and kept with AMP.
But their whole infra is a shitstorm
Lowest I saw was 1gb for wings to be fair
Ram usage doesn't appear to scale with docker containers
That's... odd...
No?
Like how is that possible
Maybe I'm just too dumb to understand how ressource management works in docker
I have no clue why wings uses so much ram tbh
But typically we're kneecapped by CPU usage before ram anyways
I mean it's good that it capped at 2gb after 50 containers or so tbh.
I only had like 4-5 games running so I thought it would kill my PC if I tried to put more
like linearly scaling
I'm also running on a fairly old version of wings rn
It's rare that a newer version costs less ressources 😅
got it
Thanks I'll check some of those. Never heard of craftycontrol. I was told Multicraft is really only for minecraft
and I thought pufferpanel was abandonned LOL
Rn on version 1.7.5 out of 1.11.6
So, been a while
From what I've heard it was
last commit to trunk May 23rd
24th*
How much memory does your system have?
8
so it's not the end of the world but I planned to use it for more than just ptero
So if I can be a cheap lil fuck 😅 would be nice
ddr3, ddr3 ecc or ddr4?
ddr4
So not super cheap
But still decently priced
essentially yeah, cpu is more beefy than the ram
I'm prob gonna upgrade
My partner wants to play Ark
lol
So...
I think I'm gonna need way more than 8gb either way now that I think about it
Yeah, so 2x32gb sticks would run you like £100 where I live
I wanna move to where you live.
LOL
I can also see kits in America for around the same price

God living here sucks.
but yeah I'll upgrade
Yeah, I can see a kit for $150

As a professional hoster, you like Ptero more?
Pterodactyl has premade stuff for any game you can run on linux
Have you ever tried AMP?
Personally, no
I've always had plenty of ram, plus it's free
Gotcha. It's pretty much the same, but it's more difficult to add new games to the roster
and it feels like only 2-3 ppl know how to use that proprietary configuration file
so every new addition is dependant on 2 ppl having free time
I feel like ptero eggs are way simpler to code for
yeah, for pterodactyl, you just go here
https://github.com/parkervcp/eggs
typically if it'll run on linux, it'll be in that github repo
Fair enough. I'll probably switch back

At least I won't have to do that whole thing again LOL
god no
if u use it
u will get 0 support.
ptero or the installer
installer
ah, it's bad? the amount of stars gave me confidence
not bad but unofficial
so u get 0 support from the pterodactyl discord
and if u do ask for support
u get told to wipe your machine
and reinstall it through the guide
I want to give access to server restarts to my partner sadly.
I keep flopping between Ptero and Amp.
AMP is more user-friendly for my partner but the templating they use to incorporate new instances is horrible. Prefer by far working with eggs.
So will probably go for Ptero.
pterodactyl will allow u to do that
so ptero would be a good choice
Yeah I see all the configs. I'm sad the scheduling seems to be way more complex than AMP's if she wants to write something. But realistically I'll probably do that.
Pufferpanel seems dead lol
it is.
some of its main devs literally moved to pterodactyl
and left behind pufferpanel
I see people recommending it still in some leddit threads
:-:
WISP seems to be a pterodactyl fork with non-essential features
Start your dream host
WISP: Game Panel
WISP will provide hosting companies with more features than ever; at a fraction of the cost. 'Basically Ptero on roids' - Dane Everitt
To be clear I don't mind paying. But this seems like a straight up rip off.
Oh it's not self-hosted.
Nvm.
I thought it was a fork with a license key like AMP.
yeah
its also monthly paid
Sons of the forest empty server 20% CPU Usage, 8GB of RAM.
It's kind of strange that this didn't happen with AMP.
Unsure if AMP is unreliable or if Sons Of The Forest just kind of sucks to run.
it will show memory reserved, but not actually used amount (thats how it is with mc/java not sure if its the same with other games)
Oh. That's inconvenient. Thanks for the tip.
I used wisp (personally) in the past and it quite literally just felt like Pterodactyl, with a bunch of 3rd party addons pre-installed, half the features relating to forge didn't work either
So far pretty happy with Ptero. Definitely not as noob-friendly as AMP sadly.
my biggest issue with pterodactyl (and most panels) is the difficulty for non-technical users to install forge modpacks
I know quite a few people that just want to play atm8, but installing it just isn't something people can do easily, so I have to do it for them
Yeah that's fair. I just want my partner to be able to reset Satisfactory after the server dies again without her having to text me at work thinking she broke something.
lol
They updated Experimental branch with a patch that basically destabilized dedicated servers completely then fucked off on vacation LOL.
satisfactory?
Yeah
@Gulag Gamer Is satisfactory actually like fun to play rn? I tried in the past but something just felt off about it
You not telling me what made it feel off makes it impossible for me to tell if it would be fun for you to play.
:PES2_HmmmmNoted:
so like, in the past I've played factorio and it just seemed better
Personally I like the gameplay, the feel and everything else.
maybe the 3d part of it and it not being in like a forced grid is weird to me
The main problem with Satisfactory imo is:
1. Dedicated server support is kind of an afterthought and it shows.
2. You can fuck yourself over really hard by starting in a bad area.
I think it's also partially because with Modded Minecraft I've been spoiled by mekanism logistical transporters
There is a world grid, it's just not visible. The game does a poor job at explaining how to build without wanting to off yourself. Like you're technically supposed to make your own grid with foundations. And there IS a world grid for foundations. You need to hold CTRL and it will snap to the grid of the map itself.
So if you spend like, 10 hours building up only to realize this later
Fixing it is a huge pain
yeah, I definitely didn't build my first stuff using foundations
For instance, new people will just put the miners on the nodes, more experienced players will put foundations over the node THEN put a miner on it.
So it's "grided"
then when I did, I don't feel like I had enough space between my machines, and my belts went at weird angles
There's also a huge issue beginners make, it's to build horizontally instead of vertically.
The game was designed for you to build "factories" vertically. But most new people are really uncomfortable about z-axes building so they just spread the base to infinity like factorio
yeah it's way more of a skill cap in terms of understanding the optimal path. The game tells yoou nothing
And by Tier 4 you get super overwhelmed by your bad start
I forget exactly where I was when I stopped, I know I had plastic, but I didn't have nuclear I think?
This is bad. Don't ever do this.
This is good
Tier 5 then
but yeah there's tricks that are actually pretty INSTRUMENTAL like build modes, mass delete, snapping to the grid with Ctrl, etc. that they don't explain at all.
It also doesn't help that the one labelled as "Beginner friendly" is actually the hardest map to build on.
oh, that and splitters just feel weird in the game, maybe because it's a 3 way split instead of 2 way
3 way split doesn't have to be used, you can just use 2 exits and it becomes 2 way
50/50 distribution
let me see if I can download the game and see how bad my old base was
5g mobile data goes brr
on my dsl connection, that would be at like 4MB/s before it would kill my husband's internet he's using for work 😔
It's not the best way of doing it either but basically you need to always think "How can I build and extend everything later when I need it"
I should have split the coal in 2 at the very beginning
but yeah there's a grid it's just not visible
The game is ultra fun with a friend. I find that it is a bit meh solo
apparently this is the base I had
more over here
yeah, so I'm apparently at tier 6 currently
