Responsive design

I want to try to do a responsive design for a website that I am creating, but I don't know if it would work with

position: absolute;

position: absolute;

I know that is not very ok, but if I don't use it the items goes where it wants. I am to the beginning of learning css and online I don't find anything to help me.
Can some one help me?
