view distance & sim distance
hello, am about to start a 1.20.1 server. what are the bare minimum values for view distance and simulation distance?

it depends on server jar iirc
wdym? like my ram allocation?
no the vanilla jar has different minimums than paper for example iirc
im hosting on a fabric server
i think the bare minimum is 1 for both
but if your talking like a playable minimum then im not entirely sure
oh yeah i meant playable minimum
i was thinking of doing 16 view distance bc anything lower just looks ugly, but im not sure if every machine can handle it
I thought the vanilla minimum was 3
im not sure what it is, when you boot up the server ill probably complain that its too low and tell you the minimum or msth
Ye it does
is 5 sim dist alright?
i think some people do 6 sim, 8 view
alright ill take note of that
If you have a fabric server u can get away with a LOT smaller, like 4 or 5 and then have ur players use the Bobby client side mod. It’s works wonders
well bobby works on everything so doesnt have to be a fabric server in specific
Yeah, but if he has a fabric server then it’s safe to assume all his players are already on a modded client, so a lot easier for them to use the Bobby mod, (just add it)
For a vanilla server, (from my experience) most players won’t want to add Bobby and just complain about the small view distance
well many fabric servers are also just for optimization mods while maintaining vanilla mechanics
True
i used a fabric server because most of my friends are on low end pcs
and bobby sounds like a great idea
The server software you use makes no impact on the rendering client.
what does that mean?
Picking fabric won't make your users lag less
oh but i added a bunch of server sided performance mods
would it make their systems lag less? or would it just benefit the server itself
The latter
ah i see, alright thank you
