how are random people joining my unreleased server?

I only recently made this server. I don't have a real ip yet, I forgot to set the whitelist, and nothings set up yet. Obviously it's not very secure, so I'm not suprised that random people were able to join the server, but I am curious about how they did. They didn't seem to have any malicious intent. They joined for a little bit, completed a few advancements, and left. So how did they find the server in the first place?

Ip scanners Whether u like it or not, it’s somewhat simple to just scan thru every ip and validate if it’s an mc server or not. Basically brute force

Fair enough. Is it a bad idea for me to release a public server? Im against the idea of a whitelist because that will limit the amount of people who will join, but would my server be seriously at risk without one? Or are there any precautions I could take if I made it fully public?

My server is a private server thats why i used a whitelist. Wouldnt advice to use that for a public server i think. Idk what kind of server you are releasig but u could at least add an anticheat to prevent random griefers

if it's a public server you should absolutely have backups or coreprotect
