it does let me sign into my Google account

Please explain the problem in words
I can’t sign into my Google account to sign into Pokémon go because I used my Google account for my Pokémon Go account
Well what you are saying does not make any sense
Make sure you login into playstore and install chrome from there
Then login with gmail on chrome
Then while you are on pokemon go login screen choose chrome external as a browser
And you should be fine
Also please specify the errors you are getting
