Will Copilot or other AI Code-Gen solutions *ruin* Advent of Code this year?
^
If not, how far away do you predict that point to be?

1. no
2. even if it becomes possible to "win" with copilot, other than a handful of people aoc isn't about "winning"
sure, but would it not be demoralizing to the many who use it as a learning exercise?
why would it?
math textbooks have the answers in the back
you can just look them up
is that demoralizing?
aoc solutions in every language are posted on reddit like an hour after the question goes live
a calculator is a bit demoralizing
i dont do advent of arithmetic
the fun part about advent of code is doing it
if people want to not do it, thats up to them
all the same tho, how long do you think it'll be?
never
because its completely missing the point
sorry, let me clarify
i have some bad news for you regarding the device that you're typing the code into
I kind of feel like this question is the same as saying no one will do jogging after cars are invented
how long b4 its apparent people are bots are answers?
some more bad news:
people who win aoc and other competitive programming things already use prewritten code
the challenge isnt writing the code
its understanding the problem
im saying leaderboard will be chock full of AI (mostly written by other people)
its like having PED in a competition
(people still run, but sports have regulations )
try doing aoc with copilot this year and see where it gets you
its an interesting experiment at least
lol, im not paying for copilot
hmm maybe ill do this and stream it
i was gonna learn go for aoc
but "prove that a dumb person (me) with copilot is still a dumb person" is an interesting idea for a video/article
to be frank i dont think copilot is good enough atm
but given the deductive reasoning seen in PaLM by google
i think next year we may see some bots...
(unless some researchers are prepping to debut something for the event)
might be able to do decently by re-writing the question tho
^clarifying cuz "ruin" means different things to different people
If botting does or doesn't have an impact on how you enjoy or approach advent of code
i'd be curious to hear your thoughts
You are right☝🏼 For people who do AoC for their own entertainment (like a puzzle / a challenge) wont be affected. If you want to compete then sure Copilot may change the game for you.

We've seen how far image generation got in just a few months, wonder how much better this has gotten since the beginning of the year... 😑
I'm also particularly interested in how bots performs on AoC given solutions of years past were likely in the training sets
